I enjoyed the two books a lot. My overall comment is that it's pretty standard fantasy bildungsroman in terms of content, but it's written by a guy who LOVES the English language, and he wields it very, very well.

This was a clever little space opera-like substance. It was one of the 2013 Nebula nominees for best novel...not the best thing since sliced bread, but I quite liked it, looking foward to the next one.

(1982)

40,000 years ago, deep within the awesome Subrano Caves of Yugoslavia, a genius tribe made their home. Not yet man, but our genetic superiors, these people left on their ceiling paintings of dazzling splendor. Other treasures, artifacts and weapons proclaimed the dizzying speed of their ascent to civilization . . . an ascent wrecked by a shattering quake that drove the few left alive fleeing down the black terror of the subterranean river . . . Styx. Now, once again, the earth has opened. Teams of scientists have entered the ghostly caves of Subrano Man. Until, once again, the earth wrenches and slams shut the only passage to the surface. And, again, a handful of desperate survivors must risk the unspeakable horror of the underworld River of Death . . . Styx.

Just finished up with Jonathan Maberry's latest called "Code Zero" and it may be his best book yet. One of the best when it comes to high-tech military, horror/thriller type novel (at least in my opinion). And just started "Ex-Purgatory" from another favorite, Peter Clines, which I see Mr. Gaines has already posted and I am curious if it stands up to the rest of the series?

Been rereading this series, in anticipation of the final book finally coming out in English this summer. This particular installment I am reading for the first time.

I just finished the Maltese Falcon last week, and am halfway through The Hot Kid (by Elmore Leonard). I'll be finishing Chess Story (by Stefan Zweig) this evening. There's a few other things I'm reading (yeah, I have like 5 books 1/3 read), but these are the front runners.

After that it'll be Bukowski's Ham on rye (I can't wait!), and then the epic Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
