O/T: How's your country doing in the Olympics?

I haven't been paying much attention, I don't much care for soccer, swimming, gymastics, ect. I have been keeping an eye on the men's & women's basketball teams. The USA got their ass handed to them this year... It was a matter of time, you knew the "world" would catch up...
I don't know about Mexico, while it is the mother land, I saw enough soccer growing up, for a lifetime. I loath that sport. I'm cursed, my youngest son is gonna be great at the game...

I don't have cable, so all I can see is the spanish channel with soccer, boxing and volleyball. Since I am from san francisco I went the womens usa soccer team, and they won!

My parent's country: El Salvador is so poor, we can't send anyone to the olympics and if someone tries, there is no sponsor and the money is stolen.

Cuba is always whining that they are the poorest country, but they own almost half of all spanish tv and have lots of stars and athletes and look very healthy to me, that pisses me off from time to time.

Medal count for the US is 34 gold, 38 silver, 28 bronze and 100 total. America normally kicks ass at the summer Olympics, but doesn't usually fare as well in the winter games. I watched more olympics this year than I ever have and have enjoyed it.

Not that well. 2 silvers (skeet shooting and wrestling) and that's it. Unless Holmen wins the marathon tonight (he won the European championships a couple of years ago so he might have some chances) this will be the first time Finland doesn't get any olympic gold medals. :erk:

But who cares about the olympics anyway, the World Cup of Hockey starts tomorrow! :kickass:

Well, Belgium isn't that good this time. Only one gold and 2 bronze medals. And LOTSA 4th places !! I love the Olympics: friendly world competition for a change !!!

Pretty good... :D
Our male handball team is fighting for gold medal today and there's a good chance they'll win it, since they're the world champions. :)
Our high jumper Blanka Vlasic was sadly drained of strength by some viral infection so she wasn't up to her best... :erk:
The weight lifter Peshalov won a bronze medal, swimmer Draganja won silver on 50m free style, rowers Skelin bros. won silver in pairs and our tennis pair Ljubicic/Ancic won bronze medal.
I suppose that's it...

EDIT: Croatian handball team won the gold medal! Hell yeah! :loco:

My country kicks butt at the Olympics (USA,) but I love to see the smaller countries and also the unknown athletes from the bigger countries that are not expected to medal, but are the more "team players" do just that. Thailand had never won a Gold medal in the Olympics, but they had an air rifle markswoman take the gold. I am sure she was probably as proud as any of the greatest track and field, swimmer or gymnastic athletes were of their accomplishments.
I am very proud of the American athletes because they aren't good because they are just born that way and have great sports facilities to practice in. They have all worked very hard to get what they accomplished, but the same goes for all of the athletes that are at the games representing their countries. My hat goes off to the Iraq soccer (football for non-Americans) team. Despite a war going on in their country, those guys played their butts off.
My hats off to coach Bellas of the Romanian women's gymnastic team as well. Talk about domination !! Can he be beat in team competition ? Team China fielded a young womens gymnastic squad this year preparing their girls for competition in Beijing in 2008. Maybe they can challenge Bellas and his wrecking machine.

I watched a little of the Olympics. Did any of you see the wrestling finals yesterday? The guy from the US won the gold. But what's up with those guy's ears?!!! All of them had these big swollen ears, I don't know how they could even hear with them. You would think they would were some heard gear or something.

I remember back in the day they used to wear the head gear, I also remember when Kirt Angle wore it to cover up his bald head when it got shaved, and he though no one would notice he was wearing a wig.
If I were wrestling I would wear the head gear, you know, 'ow, with the hurting and the scraping.' heh heh heh.

Depends. My actual country like Tool said took a dive  . My birth country on the other hand won football (soccer for US) and basketball (so long dream team :muahaha: ).

I do like soccer a lot, but it pisses me off that our soccer team are the athletes who get the most support from the goverment and what not and they're the ones who get their asses kicked faster than anybody else

This year's "dream team" made me more proud than any other in history. With the exception of Allen Iverson, I don't think any player on that team (maybe Duncan) was the first choice picked by whatever committee chooses them. Most of the players that were offered the position declined bcause they might suffer an injury and void their multi-million dollar contract. The players that did accept the job, were often playing out of their normal position and couldn't play well as a team, but at least they went out there and played for their country against some of the other best players in the world and did their best. There is no shame for ANY of those players on the 2004 "dream team." It is those that declined the play that should burden the simple shame of not going out and playing for the country that has made them millionaires.

Medal count for South Africa - 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze, we pretty much suck but I do like watching some events like gymnastics,. diving and hockey.

Nobody who competes in the Olympics sucks...each and every one of them are champions in my eyes, simply for the dedication they apply to their sport. Except of course, for the idiots who test positive for performance enhancing drugs - USA included. That is one of the dumbest things an athelete could do. It's like - the "shame" of not coming in first, is worse than the shame of getting busted?

My hat goes off to the atheletes from each and every country (especially the Iraqi soccer team), and to Greece for putting together a great Olympics...I was lucky enough to be off the first week and I watched more than I ever have.
