We went through the same thing here in the State woodlots, which is reverse bidding if you can follow me. Fly by night Canadian loggers from Quebec were coming down with green cards and with big money buying up woodlots, they destroyed the residual stands. On one lot in particular they outbid me by $75 dollars, they ripped the bark of every remaining tree, which for those of you that dont know, means 20 ft of the butt log of that tree will be rotten and worthless come then next time of harvest, this is the best part of a tree. I was instrumental in getting residual stand damage regulations put in effect because I went down to the DEC office and went entirely off the hook. I asked them in a very rude tone "do you mean to tell me that destroying 50 acres of timber was worth an extra $75 ? " The Canadians were not the only ones, crew from the Adirondacs that worked on International Paper and Finch Pryn company land had done much of the same, because American corporations simply done give a shit. International Paper eventually built mills in South America from the record profits they showed off our mills... but then I have already gone into that... NO ? These crew were eventually weeded out but the damage was catastrophic, thousands of acres or OUR (yes tax payers, that is OUR land) forests had irreversable quality of timber damage. None the less the money was so big, our state government just went to giant clear cuts as a way to appease the remaining "big time" timber harvestors. They also stopped replanting and just threw all the money from timber sales into the states general funds.
But "times have changed" and... hows that go ? "I have the inability to ADAPT"... well let me just say, I am PROUD of the fact that I have not become so complacient.
