Similar to what others have said, I think cats are awesome, so that just makes this even more fucked up than it already was. I think 15 years is excessive though, not that he will get that sentence.

No, retard, it's more expensive to go through all of the trials etc. for the death penalty. Taking someone out back and shooting them in the head for capital punishment makes those who would do it no different than some crazy barbaric states in the modern world.

Exactly. We have this crazy thing called civilization. See, back in the old day the penalty for more or less everything was death. And by "old day" I mean as recently as the mid-to-late 1600s. But now we have this crazy "Justice" stuff by which capital punishment is only legal for (I'm pretty sure) murder and treason. Since cats aren't humans, this wasn't murder, and it sure wasn't treason. Thus, we aren't going to kill him.

I admit to harboring tendencies towards the death penalty, and having my own twisted fantasies about executing criminals like this guy. True, he has not killed a human being, but what he did was still twisted and possibly evidence of further psychological trauma. Since he has caused no physical harm to a human being, he should be treated for mental health and forced to pay for bereavement.
However, I also have the personal belief that people who have no respect for life (be it human or animal) do not deserve it themselves. Now, before someone raises the question of whether I've ever killed an insect, let me say that I have; but I think we can agree that people who kill insects do so due to practical reasons and not the kind of demented and twisted pleasure that this criminal seems to get from killing a cat. It seems to me that this guy either has little to no respect for the life of other beings, or he cares so little about his own existence that he engages in perverse acts such as this. If the latter is true, perhaps we should just do him a favor and dispatch his soul to Hades. When it comes to people like this I have so little tolerance, and it's a personal fault. I just can see no purpose or meaning in these kinds of acts. It vexes me.

Okay. I see what you're saying. However, I hope you'll agree that as a society we have to deal with this within the confines of the law, which in this case will probably send him to treatment, which I think is fair.
I think I should point out that there's a good chance he was high on something pretty intense at the time.

I work for Travelodge taking calls, booking rooms, answering queries, and getting totally abused. You just find out how stupid people can be. Sometimes its quite frightening.
