A friend of mine who plays in a death metal band have asked me to make an intro track for their live gigs. The problem is I have very few ideas and they haven't given me much to go on, just "It must be dark and eeeevil!!!".
So I have sampled my cats purring as a roaring foundation, and I added a few random tones from a sampled musicbox. I'm thinking about some reversed whispering. What else? Do you have any ideas, or links to inspiring intros?
:kickass:

Go orchestral.

I know it's not directly the same thing and ours are more "battle" orientated, but a good orchestral intro can really add a new level of awesome to a gig.

ACTUALLY!

I did a track for a band with the exact thing you want...

Their bassist was a stupid wee cunt and didn't like it but i can get it and send it to you if you want?

Nice intros.
Orchestral was my first thought too, but they don't want that. Theese guys are true as hell :) And the problem is that they don't really know what they want, just what they don't want.

Please, send it if you want. Anything that that can borrow ideas from is good. Put it on the ftp?

I'm trying to find the bastard thing.

Need to wait till one of the band come online so i can get it off them!

I'll hook you up as soon as i get it!

Ah, you need yourself some metallic scraping:

• Take a cheese-grater and a knife.
• Record the sound of you scraping said knife down said grater
• Clone it, and drop it an octave
• Clone THAT, and drop it an octave
• Add any reverb you like and set it to the 'Cathedral' preset

Instant Evil. If you want to get REALLY Evil, you may want to repeat the process for the other sides of the grater - though I've heard that on playback you may actually summon The Real Devil.

Steve

I think the best (evil) opening track I ever heard was on Ozzy's Tribute album. Carl Orff's "O' Fortuna", man that gets me every time. You need Omen-like choir and orchestration for sure!

Oh yeah, and the soundtrack for Jacob's Ladder. Anything on there is awesome!!!!! That pan flute is amazing and creepy.

to get dinosaur sounds authentic enough to be on jurassic park movies (roars/growls/the works)

record someone doing a death sort of growl

then use waves sound shifter to drop it super low (it keeps it in real time)

sounds as evil as hell its self

I really liked the idea of having a radio broadcast in the track. Do you guys know how to make a change-the-channel-on-the-radio-sound? The samples i've found has short clips of music in it, so I might have to do my own with my own soundclips in it..?

em, why don't you make one yourself? :P get one of those cheap handheld radios, and mic it's built-in speaker, no need for a lo-fi filter haha :) and when it tunes to something like james blunt, let it play for a while, then shoot the damn thing! i reaaaally want to (and i will :P ) do that with the song that goes "lalalalalalalala, life is wonderful ohh lalalalalala", for an intro :) really "metal" imho haha

Make a little recording/rendering of some white or pink noise. Then cut this wav-file into small pieces which you put in-between the different radio/tv channels. Actually this lends itself better to TV than radio ...

I always told myself if I ever get a band thats brutal and epic, I was going to use Basil Poledouris' "Riddle Of Steel/Riders Of Doom" from Conan the Barbarian.

Also, Darkane have awesome intro to their albums.

Chains draging on the ground, metal crunching, whispering, verb drenched screams and growls, huge chiors and synths (really low in the mix) and explosions which start real soft and get louder untill the final, huge, limiter ducking motherfucker nuke sample.
If they wana be generic evil, try taking some quotes from the Bible or a horror movie, like the Omen or something.
