I think this is what I love so much about Opeth. Not just the fact they've written some amazing songs and albums, but their entire discography is so incredibly consistent.
The first two albums, whilst lacking the sonic quality of the later albums, has some amazing songwriting, and great dynamics. I haven't had a chance to get into Orchid as much as the other albums (although Under The Weeping Moon is one of my favourite Opeth songs) but I absolutely love Morningrise (Advent is a great opener, the guitar counter melodies on TNATSW are absolutely immense, BRI is just epic and To Bid You Farewell is probably one of most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard).
MAYH is just brutal. Some of Opeth's best and most well known songs- When, Demon Of The Fall, as well as in my opinion, one of their most under-rated songs, April Ethereal. And I love the lyrical link between the songs.
Still Life is just amazing in every sense. The instrumentation is so intrciate, and at times very complex. The lyrical concept really ties the whole thing together. And The Moor is a great opener, Godhead's Lament is probably my favourite Opeth song, and the album also contains one of the band's personal favourites (Face of Melinda)
Blackwater Park- Probably the first classic album of the 21st century. The Leper Affinity was probably their strongest song to date, the whole production takes a massive step up from Still Life, and with songs like Harvest and The Drapery Falls, they really turned a corner in terms of contrasting the brutality with the beautiful, melodic sections. Plus, The Funeral Portrait has some seriously cool guitar riffs in.
Deliverance- In my opinion the most under-rated Opeth album. This album is just the sound of pure evil! The cold, sterile production, the mechanical drumming, the dark lyrics and artwork. Everything about it is just so haunting, and I love the way that it lures the listener into a false sense of security with A Fair Judgement- and then that outro riff is just so crushing. And then once again with For Absent Friends- it just kicks straight into Master's Apprentices (heaviest Opeth song?) For me, BTPISIO is a slightly disappointing way to end and otherwise killer album, but it does have it's moments.
Damnation- the perfect remedy to Deliverance. Possibly the most chilled out album to ever be recorded by a metal band, the songwriting is just spot on, and the whole record just has a great vibe.
Ghost Reveries- I love the way Opeth sign to a major label, probably prompting numerous fans to question their integrity. And then they come out with THIS! For me, the srongest album in every sense. In terms of songwriting, production- not to mention Mikael's vocals are better than ever. A perfect album.
So yeah dunno what the point of this thread is, I start writing about how much I love Opeth, and sort of ramble on, so I apologise.
To make this discussable, has there ever been a point in time when you've doubted the band, or their integrity? Do you think there's any releases in particular that let the rest of their discography down? As I pretty much got all the albums at the same time, I've listened to them a fairly equal amount (bar perhaps Orchid) so I love every one for slightly different reasons, but they're all great albums IMO.
