Opeth "Coil" gives me some serious goosebumps!

Opeth don't do the clean shit as well as they do the heavy stuff.
I've found that the acoustic interludes in the heavy tracks tend to be better to my ears than the entirely acoustic/soft tracks.
But that's probably just me.

Haha, prog yes, screamo NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Album wise, my favorite is Ghost Reveries, but since most people (including me) got started and hooked on "Blackwater Park", that's my vote! Just start at the beginning, "The Leper Affinity" and "Bleak" (the first two tracks) are some of the strongest on the album, so if you don't like those, then that's pretty much it I'd say!

I thought Opeth was screamo/prog... It is one of those bands that everybody likes except me. I will give a try. Any album recommendation?

Depending on the album you'd have to think of 2 different bands.

Old Opeth
= Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse
= Melodic/Progressive Black/Deathmetal

Later Opeth
= Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation (all accoustic), Ghost Reveries, Watershed
= Progressive Deathmetal with some weird 70s progshit that everybody thinks is cool :goggly:

Hahahahaha! No, actually I'm just kidding but can definately make a cut around Still Life whereas I prefer the more Swedish melodies of the first 3 albums. Granted, they do not sound as fluid on places as they got better in arranging songs but the melodywork is just out of this world and (for me) a lot more passionate, refreshing and dreamy.

I wouldn't lump MAYH in with orchid and morningrise
those 2 albums sound black metal as fuck to me, and MAYH is just filthy dirty death metal from start to finish :D
Jevil, start with Blackwater Park, but be warned, it may ruin the other albums for you, because Blackwater Park is one of the most perfect albums ever written.

Yeah, I must say, I enjoy later Opeth wayyyy more than the earlier stuff. Different strokes I suppose, but I think the later stuff is way more mature and just straight up better. Opeth is one band that has NOT disappointed me yet. I was anxious for "Watershed," but it really did live up to my expectations.

I'd say start with "Blackwater Park" like the others have said, then check out "Damnation" & "Deliverance." After multiple listens, you should know what Opeth is all about.

"Ghost Reveries" and "Watershed" are amazing as well, but you might as well start off with the classics first.

Totally agree Joe, especially about the maturity part, MAYH just sounds much less mature in terms of songwriting and ideas to me - I still dig it, but it doesn't hold up to the later stuff IMO, I totally feel they've only gotten better with time! And I've never heard Morningrise, and only bits and pieces of Orchid, which I was kinda "meh" about

Yeah, I think ultimately it depends on what one prefers musically, and not specifically where Opeth as a band have gone with their musical style. I love classic rock and old prog too, so naturally I love their later stuff.

I do think it's quite nutty that some people bashed "Watershed" when it came out! I fell in love with it during the first listen!

Hell, some people still do - oh well, can't please everybody! :D (though I always skip over the ends of tracks 2-4, that's all overly drawn out self indulgence IMO :erk: )

honestly i think the middle three would be best to start with myah, still life, bwp.

i think that mayh has some awesome ambiance that the other albums dont really have.. but then again all opeth albums are unique..

all i have to say is the last 2 times i saw them, axe wasn't very tight on some spots....

but that doesnt mean i dont like the style he has brought with him to opeth.

Exactly
there was nce a time when you didn't have to skip the end of an opeth track because of overly drawn out self indulgence
mikey is losing it :(

Lopez just got boring imo. Axenrot and Fred brought some balls back into Opeth. I get into so many discussions with people about how much worse they think Axenrot is...in my experience in learning some of the drums for both Bloodbath and Watershed, I can safely say Martin Axenrot is at the very least more adventurous. Having said that, I dont dislike everything Lopez did, but I feel they made the right decision in getting Axe for the job.

I don't personally think Axe is that creative (especially when it comes to Opeth, who have always had fairly flamboyant drumming whether brutal or not,) but he's tight as fuck for sure
I do like how much more balls Watershed has, some of it reminds me of MAYH to no end, which is never a bad thing.
and as for fred, i dunno, old man lindgren brought the blues, freds all just like WEEDLEWEEDLEIMSWEDISH and i dont think i dig that quite as much

Yeah, I did see them back in October of last and they messed up one song they did, I think it was Godhead's Lament maybe. They didn't bother finishing the song and just went on with the next one hehe. But on the records he's done I like the style. I'm not an Opeth fanboy by any means, I only recently got back into them after years of shun.

we got godheads lament when i saw them on the ghost reveries tour and it was utterly perfect
stoked as fuck
blackwater park for the last track as well, my neck has never felt such monumental pain
demon of the fall for encore too, oh fuck

I think Orchid and Morningrise is their best releases and I still remember when MAYH was released and I was quite dissapointed with the change of direction. Everyone's always impressed about BWP, but the only reason I even have that album is the 2nd disc including those 2 acoustic tracks. As soon as I get the 7" with those tracks, the cd can go. However, I do like Still Life for some reason and also Damnation. I also got Watershed and I must say that I'd love Mike to record and album full of tracks like Coil and Burden and leave all those already too familiar death-parts away, not only in vocals, but also in music.
