I hear there's a solid underground metal community in Pakistan. They have their own little concerts and what not. Metal is still a growing genre, but unfortunately, I think there's more bad then good. The sub genres are just getting out of hand. The most recent one that came up is "New Metal". Bands like Linkin Park...and As I Lay Dying fall under that, but what pisses me off the most is that I hate it when people associate stuff like that to other deeper genres. Metal, Death Metal, and Progressive metal are separate worlds. You just can't compare stuff like Dark Tranquility to Linkin Park because there are a slew of differences. Dark Tranquility should be considered real metal. My point is it; I'm fed up with the misunderstood universe. The world of good shit is so miss communicated and misinterpreted because of all these lame sub genres.

All these metal core bands, emo bands, new metal bands sometimes get in the way and mess up opinions of how people think of folks who like metal. Something like Dream Theater can change your perspective if you think all metal has to do with is screaming like a little bitch, and playing the guitar. Folks just don't get it.

Anyways, I was wondering if there are Opeth fans in countries that you don't hear about usually. This would be the ideal thread to talk about what folks in other countries think of bands like Opeth, and how the metal community is in the various, different countries.

dude...wake up and smell the flowers...a lot of people like myself happen to like not just Metal or Death Metal but also hardcore and Industrial and even a little New metal and punk...You can't restrict us metal lovers to just metal and I don't think this has anything to do with where you live unless there are limitations on freedom of speech like in china or some of the muslim countries. It's more a question of what's your personal taste.
Ever since the internet came to just about every average home in non 3rd world countries...the planet is turning into one big community which knows almost no boundries

So essentially this is just another thread whining about how not everyone has the same rigorous criteria as you for splitting hairs in genres of music?

Huge underground metal following in India...Check out this site:

http://www.rsjonline.com/Index.asp

Click on the countries on the right to browse their music from amateur bands that play just as good, if not better than some of the folks in the West. And I personally know more people that are into metal back in India than I do here in the New Jersey...people actually care about melody and instrumental skill over there moreso than popularity, image, and current trends. That's why in places like the north of India in the villages people like my 24 yr old cousin grew up listening to Metallica and such.

Actually, this is a better, more specific link for us metal heads:

No, not at all. I'm just expressing my point of view, and to some extent, I find it that most people would agree with me. The thing that really bugs me is that when someone makes fun of stuff like Opeth, but they think Linkin Park is good "rock", or metal. The truth is that they don't know squat about the talent out there.

You get me?

Just a thought.

Then again, I'm contradicting myself by saying everyone has their own opinion. However, most opinions against metal are really freaking ignorant.

Opeth is not huge in guadalajara, mexico. i have a bunch of friends that are fans, but mainly because i introduced them to the jewel that is opeth.
them etal community is big though, but mainly power metal and sstuff like that which i don't like... oh and that crappy metal-core and shit like that... you know slipNOT is BIG here.
it's cool though, you know... to be almost sure that you're TEH biggest fan of a band in your city

The fact of the matter is, Metal is a far more superior genre of music then rock or a lot of stuff out there. A person that studies music and is open minded should automatically know this.

Don't get me wrong, though. I appreciate my rock. That's for sure. Some Nirvana, Alice in Chains....

Awesome stuff.

Alice in Chains is metal :)

Yes, yes. I agree with that. :) Right on.

Alice in Chains is metal? I dunno, I've always thought AIC was rock/alternative.

R.I.P Layne Staley from AIC, and Curt Cobain from Nirvana.

Why do you care? People always like retarded mass-produced crap better than quality, deep, or artistic stuff. This is true in the case of virtually all media- art, literature, TV, movies, radio, and music.

Besides you know Opeth is better than Linking Park, why do you care if someone else doesn't think so?

If by superior genre you mean subgenre.

Alice in Chains are generally considered grunge, btw, but grunge is also a form of rock.
