Yes, its true they do cop a bit of shit every now and then.
Mainly, Opeth dont follow the standards of 'metal'. Steven Wilson calls it "that level of sophistication" but he's a dickhead so who cares. Quite frankly, the fact that they dont write agressive music, and include melodic and accoustic interludes. This, as any devoted death metaller or thrasher will tell you, is for pussies.
That is all.

I haven't heard them called that for a while. But I rarely visit outside of this forum anyhow. I think it's predominantly to do with the fact that they'd spontaneously break into acoustic ditties during heavy riffage on the early albums. That kind of dynamic of being extremely soft, as well as having their riffs not be quite as straight forward and in your face as other metal has earned them that kind of 'flower' metal reputation.
