opeth- Ghost Reveries

LOL, it has a rather pernicious effect the more you listen to it, doesn't it? The more you listen too it, the more it will continue to grow on you... ;)

It already has grown on me considerably. ;)

I listened to the album in full again, and here's what I've concluded (my opinion, of course):

Ghost of Perdition: 10/10, my favorite and an awesome interlude melody
The Baying of the Hounds: 6/10, average
Beneath the Mire: 7/10, cool guitar leads throughout
Atonement: 6/10, average
Reverie/Harlequin Forest: 10/10, another high point
Hours of Wealth: 8/10, my favorite clean track, beautiful song
The Grand Conjuration: 4/10, my least favorite; too repetitive
Isolation Years: 7/10, pretty little song

I'm not too fond of The Grand Conjuration. The opening riff and chord progression is cool, but became a little boring after they played it like eight times in the intro. I'm also not too keen on the typical verse/chorus structure.

Two Opeth questions:

1. What would you consider their best album? I've heard this one, Blackwater Park, and MAYH, and I like this one the best. BP is cool, too, and I don't really like MAYH (Demon of the Fall is badass, though).

2. Do they have a keyboard player? I hear keyboard in some songs, but it's not really in the foreground. There's a fifth guy on their site who it says is in the band, but it doesn't say what he plays. I'm pretty sure it's the same guy in The Grand Conjuration video playing what looks to be a keyboard, but I'm not 100% sure.

Glad to see you like "Hours of Wealth"...never would've thought I'd hear something so gospel-y out of Opeth, but it works. :)

1) Personally I do go for MAYH and Damnation. But if you're a fan of Ghost Reveries, my two next suggestions for you would be Blackwater Park and Still Life, in that order.

2) OK, the keyboard player you hear on BWP, Deliverance, and Damnation is a guest musician, Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree. But right before Ghost Reveries, Opeth did get a permanent keyboard player, and his name is Per Wiberg.

Hope that helps! :)

1. For me, either Still Life or Morningrise is my favorite. Right now it's Still Life, but next week it will probably be Morningrise again.

2. As already stated, Per is their new keyboardist. He's a great musician, and from what I can tell, a really good guy too. I think Mikael convinced him to join over a game of badminton...or something like that.

These guys are okay. I have never enjoyed these kinds of vocals that much, but it's still good.

My favorite album with this type of vocals is Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon. It's great.

I LOVE the new album, but Blackwater Park is still by far my favorite. That may change with time. I've listened to Blackwater Park a LOT and in addition to being well-recorded and engineered it is extremely well paced and laid out. I love to slap it in the player, put on my headphones, lay down, and sink into my pillow listening to it... auditory bliss

Yeah, that's my favorite so far, too. Bleak, The Leper Affinity, and the title track are all unbelieveable.
