Opeth songs?

That is not singing its growling! Its just my opinion and in it I hope people like you die! I hate jerks like you always acting like everyone elses opinion is shit. That "singing" sounds like they are takin a shit. Those growls that you here in opeth and some katatonia are the uglies sounds I have ever heard in my entire life and im ashamed to be a musician to know that people actually play good music along with that singing. You know goddamn well that if they were SINGING clearly and bueatifully the damn song would be 10x as good! But if you think that growling is better than thats fine its your opinion! Do what you like. Oh yea, ever see lighting and thunder when its snowing? I see that right now.

You've only just begun to listen to death metal I take it. Well I've been listening to it for about a half a year now and when I was new to it I thought the growls were completely unnecessary as well. It's an acquired taste and you won't like it in a day... not even a week. You'll have to actually sit down with the music, concentrate on all aspects of the song and see it as the artist means for you to see it. If you'll actually listen to Opeth songs with growling you'll realize the clean parts of those songs are much more heartfelt and beautiful than in songs with only clean vocals. But the best song without growls that I can recommend is Face of Melinda. Well, off of the Damnation album I certainly love In My Time Of Need. Otherwise you should really sit through the growls. Listen to Demon of the Fall, The Twilight is My Robe and Godhead's Lament. Those are some of the most beautiful Opeth songs, but of course, when I hear a different song that opinion has a tendency to change. Hehe. Just give it time and you'll realize how growls are really unique and mesmerizing. And Mikael Akerfeldt has one of the best growling talents I've ever heard. :)

I think it's rather embarrassing when guys complain about the growling vocals. It's such a huge part of certain bands' sound that unless you understand the growls, you can't understand the band.

And to suggest you don't like the growls in Opeth is fucking ridiculous. Sorry, but it's true. People that have been into this music for 7-8 years are shaking their heads around the world....

What do you mean, 'when you were new to it'? You've only been listening to this stuff for six months.

By the time I found Opeth, I was ready for it, and at one point it all clicked. I think it was when I read the lyrics to Still Life. If you follow it closely, clean vocals represent a sense of calm or hope, as opposed to growling vocals representing anger, desperatism, and other darker themes.

Holy shit, I never picked that up before. Nicely spotted. I'm gonna have to go back and listen to read all my Opeth CDs, and check whether this was the same for all the albums. I know Still Life was a concept work, but it makes sense for Mike to use this formula throughout all the others. Fuck man, you've just given me a revelation.

Well, since this thread was supposed to be about suggestions, I thought I'd steer it back into topic :)

Ummm..pretty much all of them have been posted...so ahem, I'll suggest one particular track off Damnation that has touched me in a way few others have. And I'm currently listening to it.

To Rid the Disease. Play on Winamp. Repeat.

The first Opeth I picked up was Blackwater Park about a year ago..at that time I hated the growly vocals so bad I thought all bands that used them were rediculous. Then I listened to Blackwater Park...over and over and over...that friggin album stayed in my cd player for 3 months almost constantly. I now completely get the need for growly vocals. I now have every Opeth and I love them all...I think they are the most brilliant band to ever grace us with their genius! My second fave of course is Katatonia:rock: definitely two brilliant bands! Do yourself a favor and really listen to Opeth...keep in mind that growly vocals can grow on you:)

I was wondering if anybody could give my some more references of Opeth songs WITHOUT the yelling. Songs like credence and To bid you farewell. I love those songs and I want MORE!!!!!!

If you like the "clean" vocals get yourself a copy of the new Opeth cd Damnation, no screaming at all, just very mellow, but superb.

I did the same as you, BP was the first Opeth I bought, at first the growling vocals put me off, but after I kept playing it, more and more of it grew on me until, like you, I couldn't stop playing it, then I went out and bought the rest of their CD's! Awesome band!

EXACTLY. This is true - My friend leant me some Dimmu Borgir CD's and Emperor and Cradle etc and I used to think "Oh dear...why are they ruining perfectly good guitars and keyboards by shouting all over the place?" and I really used to hate it...and now, when I look back on that [this was about 2 years ago], I can't honestly believe I thought that! I love it all now, and old Katatonia songs such as "Nowhere" and "Murder" are simply amazing...especially because the Opeth vocalist was doing vocals for one of the albums, I forget which one...

On a side note: I went to see Opeth last month - it was SO fantastic, and the support band Madder Mortem were very, very good too!

Ha ha, I did something similar too. I heard "The Drapery Falls [EDIT]" on a mix CD with a magazine [Kerrang!] and I thought "oh wow, another band like Katatonia" [cause the edit was at about 4 minutes, just after the Ahhhh's and nicely before the growling came in - then I downloaded some of Blackwater park and thought "oh....oh no, why are they doing that?" but like the rest of you, it didn't leave my CD player...ever, really. It's one of the most fantastic albums in the whole world, I made sure I got the double CD version though...

I'm glad I helped you realize something new. I preach the gospel of Opeth whenever I can :). I think somebody actually gave me negative rep points for making that post too, fucker didn't leave a name or anything, fucking bastard. Honestly, who would give me negative rep points for that damn post? I mean, not like I care about them, but just the fact somebody would do that.

fucking fucker, you know who you are...

Opeth songs? I'd recommend:

The Night And The Silent Water
The Amen Corner
The Drapery Falls
Black Rose Immortal
Advent
In Mist She Was Standing
The Twilight Is My Robe
Demon of the Fall
The Leper Affinity
When

And ones with all-clean vocals:
Credence
To Bid You Farewell
A Fair Judgement
Patterns in the Ivy II

And pretty much every other song they've done.

@DemonOfTheFall: well said!!
I used to hate growling vocals... I couldn't understand why people would listen to that shit? It was actually through Opeth, and somewhat through paradise Lost, that I learned to appreciate them. I'm still not the biggest fan of growling - but for some music it's just so right! Like Opeth, for example. Some people can't stand growling, some people can't stand vocalists like Bruce Dickinson... personally, I think it's just a matter of learning to like it. And IMO, once you've "learned" to like something, you will like it forever, whereas what you love instantly, might not always sound so good...

I also hated growling at first. I still really hate it in almost every band that does it. Opeth is the one exception. His growling is actually quite good. Some bands can REALLY ruin a song with growling. Mike really knows how. As other people have said, if you like Opeth, but don't like the growling, buy Damnation. I just listened to it 3 and a half times in a row yesterday. It is a masterpiece.
