I'm looking for some albums that expand on Death Metal to make something far more interesting. Something with a strong sense of atmosphere, or with compelling songwriting. If the selling point is brutality or catchiness, I'm not likely to really care for it.

Some examples of this:

At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours
Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
Argentum - Ad Iteritum Funebrarum
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Gorguts - Obscura (a bit on the fence with this one, but I keep coming back to it because it's just so damn interesting to listen to)

Yes, some aren't really DM, but I mentioned them anyway because they're relevant for what I like to hear in DM.

Albums rather than bands please.

I'd be a bit more specific if I were you. Anyways, my picks:

The Chasm - Deathcult Fort Eternity: The Triumph, Conjuration Of The Spectral Empire
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Demilich - Nespithe
Mithras - Worlds Beyond The Veil
Miasma - Changes
Appalling Spawn - Freedom, Hope & Fury
Arghoslent - Incorrigigle Bigotry
Psypheria - Gothic Disturbance

Nile - In Their Darkened Shrine (polarizing band, some love it some hate it)
Cynic - Focus
Dark Tranquility - Fiction

Wormed - Planisphaerium (just...win)
Pavor - Furioso (weird structures, sometimes more "BM" in riff writing)
Symbyosis - On The Wings Of Phoenix (very very cool in general)
Saprogenic - The Wet Sound Of Flesh On Concrete (great guitar tone that sounds really "off" but just right)
Demiurg - Breath Of The Demiurg (subtly atmospheric and awesome)
Vore - Lord Of Storms (chugging brooding DM with a 9-minute acoustic track)
Pantokrator - Blod (Christian death metal that DOESN'T SUCK!)
Stargazer - The Scream That Tore The Sky (just really interesting)
Visceral Evisceration - Incessant Desire For Palatable Flesh (the weirdest album ever; melodic gothy doom/death with...gore lyrics?)
Caducity - Whirler Of Fate (epic death metal w/ D&D style lyrics)
Infester - To The Depths...In Degradation (veeeery lurid and creepy)

Adramelech - Psychostasia
Cartilage - The Fragile Concepts of Affection

...and anything by Immolation past their debut.

Agressor - Medieval Rites
Misanthrope - Visionnaie
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Pavor - Furioso
Demilich - Nespithe
Esqarial - Inheritance
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
Cynic - Focus
Nocturnus - The Key
Death - Human
Melechesh - Sphynx
Orphaned Land - Mabool

Pretty much every finnish death metal act. More specifically Slumber of Sullen Eyes by Demigod and Nespithe by Demilich. I'd also check out

Wisdom Of Darkness by Belial
Diabolical Bloodshed by Nominion
Ritual Of Infinity by Morpheus Descends
Descent Into The Absurd by Fleshcrawl
Terrians Vagues by Dark Faith
World Of Myths by Crypt Of Kerberos
Grey Misery by Disgrace

Atheist's Unquestionable Presence
First to combine jazz elements with death metal. Also often called the first tech death band, with their ability to change time signatures.

Guessing you might of heard it already though.
