They have quite a few albums and one of my friends recently gave ALL of them to me. Which ones are must listens? I don't believe my friend when he says they ALL are awesome. I listened to 'I Hear Black' and wasn't impressed, but I dig the shit out of 'Under the Influence'.

Feel the Fire, Taking Over, Under the Influence, The Years of Decay, and Horrorscope.

Do I really need to bother with the others at all? Most bands with this many releases tend to repeat themselves over time, unless they're Kreator.

No. Maybe a live album, but the rest of their studio material is either expendable or lame.

they have some genuinely good songs on their later albums

overkill writes the only groove bullshit music i'll likely ever enjoy -- songs like battle, cold hard fact, necroshine and the sound of dying are very stupid but real good and i don't care what anyone says

Been listening to them all day now, and can firmly say that 'E.vil N.ever D.ies' from YoD is my favorite by far.

BTW, I feel Skeletonwitch took alot of inspiration from "Bloodletting'. Listen to the beginning of 'Death Comes Out to Play' and then thirty-five seconds into 'Upon Wings of Black' from Beyond the Permafrost. So similar. Meh.

I'd say Taking Over is their only essential work. The fact that they were never able to match its quality, is what kept them from enjoying a level of success similar to Anthrax.

did any of you hear IRONBOUND yet? ...
like I said in another thread, its probably top 3 Overkill ... flawless from beginning to end.

just fucking slays and puts to shame any of the other "veteran" bands recent releases.

i am going to say something now (probably vodka fueled) that might get my ass kicked.

I really think this new disc is the most consistently kick ass disc Overkill has ever put out. They must have recorded this while coked out. :kickass:

Sorry to break it to you man, but you say stuff like this EVERY SINGLE TIME one of your old fave bands from your hellthrashing days release something new so noone really listens anymore. I don't doubt that this latest Overkill album has a few kickass songs though!

for what it's worth though the "general consensus" this time around is that overkill has gone the extra mile for this album and although they've been "consistently good" for ages, this is getting "what the hell suddenly happened haha buy this guys" reviews all over the place which is not usually the case

although i really agree that lurch's modus operandi is "GUYS DID YOU HEAR THE NEW SLAYER? ITS SO COOL. SO COOL. GONNA FORGET ABOUT IT NEXT WEEK BUT THIS SLAYS MOTHERFUCKERS."

also let's talk about the new HEATHEN which i was looking forward to for about three years before kinda losing interest

i heard a few songs on youtube and while it's still the best thrash metal you could ask for for a band that old, the stupid production is awkward and really holds the whole thing back. preferred the rough demo
