OZZFEST VS. MAYHEM.....

WHAT?!!!! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!![/QUOTE]

HICKEY from Type O Negative fame, will be handling the duties, as he did when kirk had to do DOWN

Has anyone been to that shortly run festival Sounds of the Underground? How was that? seems like it did ok?

I saw it the 3 years that it toured. Every year it went to a smaller venue. Then it went away. I'd say that it didn't do that great.

I did enjoy the shows, but other than Lamb of God the first year, they never had a headliner (As I Lay Dying and Gwar) that was more than a club headliner at most.

I did hear about that tour. The guy might be a great guitarist, but I can't bring myself to witness this band without Kirk. With that being said, I think I'm probably going to be showing up much later than anticipated so I'm just in time for BLS.

Wow! Killer of Giants. That's pretty cool. I'm so glad he decided not to use anything off of the last album, but I am a little disappointed he only is playing one off the new one as I would've liked to have heard "Let it Die" or "Soul Sucker". Good set list though. Actually has me a bit more excited now.

I am worried now about Halford's set though as I heard there were a lot of fans booing him essentially since he wasn't playing any Priest songs. I don't mind that as I like his solo stuff a lot, but I really don't want to hear people booing the guy.

OMG really? That's bullshit. Frickin' people are just so immature. They should be thanking their lucky stars the guy is out there this year playing while the rest of JP is back home with their feet up. No respect at all for the Metal God....unbelievable.

Then again, this is the same festival that threw eggs at Iron Maiden....I s'pose I shouldn't be surprised....:zombie:

Yeah but that was set up by Sharon. Ozzy and Halford at least like each other. I don't know how many people did complain about Halford, but I did read that people were complaining in a couple of reviews of the show. Just as long as they don't at the Chicago show I'll be happy. It is quite silly though when it is his solo band. What did people really expect when he's given less than an hour?

Ozzfest - Tinley Park, IL - Aug. 17th 2010

So my plan to spend $10, see Halford, Crue and some Ozzy came out flawlessly.

I got there and sat on the lawn 5 minutes before Halford hit the stage. The timing couldn't have been more perfect. The audience was a very nice mix of young and old. A lot of women present for being a metal show. There were people selling ticket upgrades, $10 for the 200s section and $20 for the 100s. The lawn was about halfway packed which was good to see cause I didn't think too many people would be at this show.

When Halford came out I was expecting intro music or something but it was just a loud guitar that busted into "Ressurection" which was weird cause I thought they were opening with Silent Screams. I can't not bitch about the sound at that venue, halfway up the lawn it was just terrible. Nothing like having the drummer hit a kick drum and have it bounce off everywhere so you end up hearing this terrible muffled sound. I got closer to the front of the lawn and the sound got better but nothing great.

Anyway Halford sounded good, he didn't hit all the notes I was hoping on Ressurection but he did a good job throughout the first songs. Halfway through Golgotha there was this terrible feedback noise and Rob was raising the mic trying to stop it but it just would not go away. Finally the verse ended and during the solo a roadie came out and gave him another mic, then on the last verse you couldn't hear him at all. His mic was on but only he could hear himself cause he didn't seem to notice anything wrong and kept singing.
The song ended without us hearing the last verse and chorus. They kicked into the next song (Crystal) which starts out with Halford singing some Ahh Ahh Ahhh's but again we couldn't hear crap, halfway through that tune the sound finally came back and there were no sound issues for the rest of the set.
Overall the band was great, Metal Mike Clas-Polish-something-ciak was awesome, and his guitar tone was incredible.

I think the crowd for Halford was lame, I wasn't sure if they just weren't aware of the songs or they even knew who he was. The whole lawn section where I was at was sitting down during the whole set and just a couple of "Woo's" after every song.

Little by little I started to notice that most of the people on my section were there for Motley Crue. There was a couple of Motley t-shirts and a guy that looked just like Axl Rose (WTF) circa 1988 although he was only like 19. So yeah a lot of 80s looking people.

As soon as the lights turned off for Motley Crue the whole section stood up and the crowd lit up. Wow I was not expectiing that. I always though that Motley was going to be the odd band out but I was very wrong. This was my first time seeing them, the stage show was great, a lot of fireworks. Mick Mars walked out and stood in front of his mic the whole show. The crowd was singing the chorus to every song and I found myself singing along as well. They played a couple of new songs that I didn't recognise and quite frankly the ones I did recognize were because of all the local tribute bands that play them all the time and the radio. I still don't own a single Motley album.
Towards the end someone gave Tommy Lee a microphone (why?) and he started to say something that I couldn't figure out because of the shitty sound and because he talked like he was a member of Insane Clown Posse (Yo yo, check diz shit out, yo). So yeah they played most of the hits, had a big piano for Home Sweet Home and a lot of fireworks.

I gotta say I really liked their set and I wanna say most of the crowd were there for them.

They definetly showed me what the power of well written 4 minute songs can do for a band.
Vince Neil still sucks.

By the time Ozzy was going onstage the place was pretty packed, I'd say 80% of the seats were taken by this point and the lawn looked full to the top but with plenty of elbow room inbetween.

I managed to get on the rail on the lawn so I had a nice view and the sound was much better there....but still shitty (Have I mentioned that the venue sucks?).

Ozzy's intro was a video of him as an Avatar with a huge blue penis, dancing on a Lady Gaga video dressed as a woman, part of the clip from the Hangover where the Chinese guy is paid the ransom for the friend and it turns out to be Ozzy and also for Twilight where he's one of the vampires (I think, I never seen the movies.)
The whole video was very funny to look at but I couldn't decifer the dialogue cause the sound was so shitty (Have I mentioned.....nevermind.)

So yeah Ozzy came out with Bark at the moon. There was a huge screen behind the stage that was great for those of us that were on the lawn cause I could see Gus G playing the solos close up.
I like that Gus does his own take on those Randy solos, but he still plays the rest of the song like Zakk. I was REALLY gratefull that they played Fairies Wear Boots and Gus brought out this old Les Paul (at least it looked old) and played it note for note like Tony Iommi without a single squeal. Awesome!

I left after Shot in the dark which was like 7 songs in. I really just wanted to see Gus G play Mr. Crowley which he did a great job with it.

Overall it was a great night, I didn't see too many people that I know except for 1 so I just kept to myself all night.

A great $10 investment.

First, thanks for the great review. Now, I'm feeling better about my investment.

I gather you went to the Tinley Park, IL show. Seems the sound is similiar to the PNC Art Center in Jersey. Mayhem was there a couple weeks ago and I could have written a similar review of the sound. Decent up close; terrible further back.

Anyway, had planned on going to the Susqua-whatever Center in Camden for Ozzfest, but heard the venue and its attached security detail was even worse than the PNC. Seriously, I've never been yelled, barked and bitched at as much as I was for Mayhem. Now that I'm in my 40's, I can't take that shit.

So... I'm giving Hartford a shot for Ozzfest. Anyone been to this venue? Anyone going for this show?

No prob and yeah it was at Tinley Park, I should probably correct that.

How did HEART OF A LION come off live?

Also, why were you shocked about the turnout for Crue?
They have played many sold out shows I think (at least here in Chicago) since reuniting a few years back. I doubt the place would have even been a third full if they weren't on it. They were easily the draw.

I mean, seriously, aside from yourself, how many people there probably knew or even cared that Gus G is in Ozzy? Nothing against the guy, but the average Ozzy fan has no clue about Gus or the bands he has been in.

If I could have, I would have gone to this for Halford alone.
Anyone who would boo him definitely deserves a cock punch!

Really good.

Never said I was shocked, just didn't know what to expect. I know nothing about this band other then seeing women in their late 30s go crazy every time local cover bands play their songs.

I doubt the place would have even been a third full if they weren't on it. They were easily the draw.

They definetly drew a lot of people but I doubt they were easily the draw.

Not sure what your point is, did I somehow led you to believe that people were there for Gus G? I mean I know I was, but I never said he was any kind of draw for this show.

If I could have, I would have gone to this for Halford alone.

This was my original idea when I heard the lineup, luckily I had a good time after his set.

No, I am not saying you said that about Gus G.
It was just to further back the statement about how much Crue aided to the draw, as the draw for Ozzy, which has been dwindling for years, is probably moreso dwindling with Zakk being gone.

Crue has always been a good draw, except during the Corabi era, and the Tommy-less era. Ha! Saw em once for Theater of Pain. I was very young but all I remember was a LOT of profanity and the band being bombed. I would have definitely watched their set, as their first 2 albums are still some of the best metal albums of all time. I do appreciate some of the rest of their catalog too.

Sounds like you had a good time.

I vowed never to set foot in Ozzfest ever again and I intend to keep that promise.

As to Mayhem...never been to that

The only festival I go to is ProgPower and I just assist a lot of concerts of bands I like... those types of festivals don't interest me in the least

Good review. For me I pretty much got there like 5 minutes before BLS as I didn't care for any of the bands before them. I would've cared for KOS if Kirk was playing, but fuck that. Anyways, BLS I thought did a really good job. However, it seemed like a lot of the fans were just sort of chatting instead of paying attention. Could've just been where I was at though. The only weird thing was they got like a 35 minutes set or so and Zakk did what seemed like a 10 minute solo at one point, which is odd for a short set. I always have liked BLS though. As a more popular metal band, they always deliver; however, they are much, much, MUCH better when they are headlining.

I'm mixed on my liking for Devildriver. I know most probably despise them, but there are times I like their songs. The one time I saw them at Ozzfest (when I worked the free event a couple years ago) they seemed to do a good job live. Last night they were just sort of meh. However, a lot of that could be the venue as I couldn't hear shit and outside of "Clouds Over California" it just sounded like noise to me.

Halford was great as you said. The problem started as you said when Halford's feedback started to happen. When he sang, he sang well but the technical problem was distracting at time. I think this was part of the problem with the crowd reaction as well as not many probably knowing the material. Overall though, at least where I was, it seemed like the crowd enjoyed it. Loved "Heart of a Lion" as I always wanted to hear it. It was interesting that he utilized his painkiller-type voice at times during the choruses despite it not being used in the studio version. Lastly, it was a great treat to hear "Never Satisfied" as it was a very cool nugget to add to the set. Well worth my trip already.

Crue as Jason knows, I hated. Absolutely hated. I had a feeling this would happen though as I'm just not a fan. I've never seen the appeal of them and most of their songs, outside of a couple just don't sound all that different from each other. I did give them a chance though and was standing for the first 3-4 songs, but since they didn't win me over I just sat down since I didn't feel the need to stand for a band I could care less for. I figured they would be the big draw though. Within minutes of when I got there before BLS I already noticed all the Crue shirts and people who looked like they were there for Crue. Still found it weird for them to do Ozzfest though as they don't seem to fit, and I'm sorry but I just don't consider the band metal.

Saladbar, too bad you left that early as I think that was before the guitar solo and drum solo which were both amazing. Understandable though if that's what you were waiting for. Ozzy's set for me really put the whole night over for me. I mean I enjoyed Halford the most because I like his stuff better, but I really did enjoy Ozzy's set. Good set list, he did better than I thought and it was good to see Gus G. My only complaint is that unlike the CA date there was no "Killer of Giants". Oh yeah and remember that Japanese 9-year-old months back that played with Ozzy? Well, he showed up in the encore and played "Crazy Train" with him.

Overall, I had a great night outside of having to suffer through Crue and the guy that was completely plastered who was next to me. Much better night than I anticipated.

No, I am not saying you said that about Gus G.
It was just to further back the statement about how much Crue aided to the draw, as the draw for Ozzy, which has been dwindling for years, is probably moreso dwindling with Zakk being gone.

Huh? I mean I'm sure his tours haven't done as well, but I think that's more to do with his past material, i.e. Down to Earth - Black Rain more than anything. Certainly it's WAY too early to judge a decline in Ozzy tours due to a lack of Zakk since it hasn't really been that long yet, and this whole tour you can't really judge since Crue probably drew about as many, if not more. There were a lot of people for Ozzy though too, especially families I noticed. We won't get a real gauge of his drawing power until he gets on a regular US tour that isn't Ozzfest.

So out of curiosity, what specifically did you hate about the Crue?

Go download TOO FAST FOR LOVE and SHOUT AT THE DEVIL and erase any predjudice you may have about the band given the celebrity status of some of their members. Some great 80's US heavy metal there. Definitely worth checking out.
