Pantera, maybe the best band in the world

It's good, but anyone else think this band is highly overrated?

You are not alone dude.

It is not even in my top 30. They are very good musicians, but there are many other bands better than Pantera.

Now...kick me, punch me... I'm waiting for you all.

Listening to Pantera´s music for the first time in my youth was like a strong punch straight to the jaw, heavy as fuck, there´s a limited list of bands i can give this description.

+1

Pantera (after cowboys from hell) are the most amazing band out there.
I mean "fuck" slayer they have one good riff everybody is talking about, Pantera has like one million awsome riffs which are all better then raining blood ;)

Listen to the "new wave of american metal" or metalcore. You hear Pantera in every band....and dont stop here. You hear pantera in a lot of modern hardcore bands too.
Like it or not, Pantera made breakdowns big

+1

Three of my defining moments as a musician are because of Pantera.
1) The first time I heard a breakdown was in "Domination"
(...)
3) I finally allowed myself to say I was a "good" drummer when I could play "Becoming" the whole way through.

Still throw on their albums today (even "Reinventing" occasionally) and I'm amazed at how awesome they still are.

+1 the Domination breakdown thing.

And "becoming" has definitely some super tricky double-bass work (which you can see on one of the Pantera home videos) on it, among others... .

That being said, I still remember in 2004 when I first heard The Great Southern Trendkill (I actually listened to that before Cowboys). The opening title track just tore my head off, I'd never heard anything like that before in my life.
The amount of aggression in the first half of the song, and the man, when it kicks into that kinda bluesy bit, that there defines FUCKING ATTITUDE in heavy metal guitar playing.

Fuckin' A ! This first song was my first encounter with Pantera and metal and aggressive music, heard it on the radio when the album was released. I wrote the band name on my wall (alongside with Sepultura, Downset, which i had heard during the same show),a nd the rest is history to me :)
If it was not for that radio show and that song and that band i think i wouldn't be in music/metal. I'd just be another douchebag that has no passion in life. Thank you Dime :)

16, first concert ever - Trendkill tour :)

I hate you/i'm jealous.

Floods has the best outro ever. not even in metal. any genre. best outro. anyone disagree?? didnt think so.

Even my sister and my dad love that riff and the quiet storm/rain sample beneath it.

EDIT : still i can see what makes it or break it for a metalhead towards Pantera :

-the aggression/extreme/in-your-face feel, from the songs/performance/production/attitude
-the groove
-the bluesy feel
-the whammy stuff
-the redneckness

They were my favorite band during my preteen and teenage years getting into heavier music. Was SOOOO into them. As I learned about so many other bands and not being able to stand that damageplan band they did after, they kind of faded out for me. Just listened to them again after not hearing them for at least a few years. I think Trendkill is a great album and cowboys had some great riffs. The rest kind of bores me now except for the guitar solos. I never realized how *poppy* a lot of it sounds til now. Dime definitely had an original style of guitar playing though.

I used to be so into the lyrics too, I can see why I was as a 13-18 year old. all those breakdowns. I hate breakdowns. :)

Funny thing I didn't realize, I use the intro riff to "living through me" all the time as a little picking warm up. Always forgot where that came from til now. What a relief.

Haha funny you say this, this riff/song is my go-to "now it's time to play some ripping downstroke thrash stuff" thing :) (next would be Metallica "Master of puppets", Testament "down for life", or some Hatesphere stuff). Great to improve on downpicking indurance and consistency IMO. I wish i had long-hair when i'm playing that song and could windmill like a mo'fo
I have a hard time nailing the chorus riff with all the pinch harmonics though (is this all up and down strokes ? downstrokes only ? all notes played or some legato work ?) ...

'Power metal' still has some good songs on it though... :)

Pantera are the only (metal) band in the world that I really struggle to understand how some people can't like them. I just assume everyone into metal must love Pantera. I mean I love Metallica/Megadeth/Iron Maiden etc, and they are legendary bands, but I can still get how certain aspects of those bands don't float people's boats.

^I soooo don't like them, mainly because of that 'I am such a tuff guy' attitude (we have a lot of morons of that type over here, so maybe that's why). Musically, Dimebag was a really good riffer, but Anselmo just killed them for me.
Technically, he's really good too, but I so dislike his whole image and his lyrical topics, I just can't get myself into them. And their fans...a lot of them are like guru (no offence, I just really don't like that type of personality).

Oh, and I don't like breakdowns :)
So see, I am one of those guys that don't like them.

I don't post often. Pantera is the best band ever. Period. Hands down. Dime was the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place. I bought black album brand new in 91 -- I thought it was the shit. Then a year later in 92 a friend of mine was like, man check this out -- and he played Mouth For War. I was floored. My life changed. I still remember that day, and it was a turning point in my life.

RIP Dime.

Pantera were a great band that wrote great songs and were the biggest metal band in the world when metal was not cool (1993-2000). I got into them in 1990 when I was about 13 and my favourite albums would be Cowboys and Vulgar but the florida/swedish death metal scene swallowed me up so I went down a different musical path. Best metal band ever though????? I don't think so, that would probably be Priest/Maiden/Mercyful Fate.
The one thing that irritates me about Pantera (and to some extent with Slayer) is the knuckle-dragging/braindead/bro-dude/crush a beer can on your forehead/spastic fans they attract with the pseudo-macho tough guy image that tags along with it. Definitive evidence for you right there that mankind descended from the apes

I fucked your girlfriend last night.
While you snored and drooled, I fucked your love.
She called me Daddy.
And I called her baby when I smacked her ass.
I called her sugar when I ate her alive till daylight.
And I slept with her all over me,
from forehead to ribcage I dripped her ass.
Sometimes I thought you might be spying,
living out some brash fantasy, but no.
You were knocked out.
But we were all knocked out you know.
In a way

I serve too many masters.

We didn't know you'd break the bottle
that the magic came in to use those jagged shards
to cut our wrists and neck.
And you'd do it too, you're that kind of dude.
But you wouldn't know what you were doing
because I didn't,
your girlfriend could have been a burn victim,
an amputee, a dead body.
But god damn I wanted to fuck.

I'm losing what's left of my fucking mind,
I serve too many fucking masters.
