Peavey 5150 clip - Studio Fredman mic technique

It sounds thick, but you might consider making some cuts around the low-mids to get more clarity. Better yet try to do something with the mic levels/positioning to get some more high-end into the sound.

i cant listen to the clip my audio is down but i wanted to ask where this whole "the studio fredman technique" came from all of the sudden, i see in alot of forums. people have been doing on/off axis techniques since...shit as longs as close micing has been around. i suppose i could start the "the audiohammer technique" or andy could start "the backstage technique" or james could start the "the safehouse technique" and you could do some clips with those too haha

Almost sounds like the real recording.... Is that the same technique/setup that The Absence used?

Well, I bought the guitar from Pete, and I think he used it on the album, but they used a Framus Cobra and an Engl Powerball with a Marshall cab with V30's, I'm not sure how it was miced or what mics they used.

Well good job on it in that case :headbang:

Thanks man. I didn't do any EQ'ing or anything to the clip, just recorded 2 tracks and that's it.

Try notching 4k by a few dB's it gets rid of the fuzzy hiss I like a3 or 4 dB cut. What's the studio freman technique? i must have missed the thread. I've been playing witht the 2 57's like that article on "heartwork". dead center on 1 speaker and off axis on another. although while at a studio here in western NY i got a killer tone on the engineer's Triple rec half stack. he used a 57 and a 421 both straight on. Then when i went back with new material i double tracked with just the 421.

The Fredman technique is very similar, just put the 2 Sm57's on the same speaker, one dead on, one angled in.

sounds like ass to me, unless you are playing stoner rock... way too round, flabby and loose... sounds like its going to fall apart/go to shit if you tried to do any tight palm muting. there is no good sizzle to this at all... just sounds all blankety.

congrats on making a 5150, a Caparison, and a Bogner cab sound shit! =)

And yes.. the "Fredman Style Mic Technique" is played. Its not even the proper way to describe it.

I'd have to second that opinion.

Well, everytime I post something, you just say it sucks and then you proceed to tell me that I've made whatever gear I used suck. I don't think it sounds amazing or anything, but it definitely doesn't sound like ass IMO. Here's a clip that has palm mutes and chords with the same setup...

It's an ok sound but maybe this guitar sound in a mix would be better to criticize.
I think your sound just needs a little bit of clarity, try removing a little bit of lowmid as Moonlapse said.
Or maybe if you think trying to boost a frequency will be ok, do it.
Keep on working cause that's the only thing to do.

Maurizio

it doesn't sound that bad, it just doesnt seem as tight as it should be considering the setup, and it does seems a little fuzzy, i'm not flaming you at all here dude, it's a shitload better sound than i can get, it just needs as kaomao said, a little tweaking. But i'd go against what kaomao said, and try to fix the tone via mic placement and eq on the amp before you think about post processing.

and another thing Ether, why the hostility man, can you not just make some constructive criticism instead of flaming the fuck out of the dude?? i don't wish this forum to turn into some of the other forums on um like the bodom forum where every thread ends up in someone getting flamed by some little twat who thinks he knows what he's on about.
