Peavey rockmaster

It rules. I still play mine to this day. I own about every amp there is to own and I can say that I still go back to it. I've got a 5150, an early 90's triple rectifier solo head, a Laney Vh100R, Line 6 HD head, a Lee Jackson modded JCM800, a JCM 2000 and a mod 3.666 ADA MP-1.

There's a great mod for it too. Check out the samples at the web site below. I am thinking very seriously about getting this mod done to my Rockmaster.

Think it comes anywhere near your 5150, or could with a mod?

I still have an old peavey bravo 112 (my first amp) that I hook up through my 212 cabinet w/ V30's and it sounds massive. Shitloads of gain. There's even a pull push knob for extra gain on the Ultra channel.

Hehe, that's me, thanks for the kind words lol. I'm not overly happy with all of my Rockmaster clips, but I think they are good. The preamp itself gets a bit thin when turned up, but this could also be a result of my tubes. I haven't changed the tubes in the rockmaster or the power amp since I've had it. I bought them both used a few months ago. I actually just sent it out to FJA Mods for the high gain modification. Supposedly it thickens it up and gets rid of the fuzzy buzzy quality in the gain. Either way, I love the preamp. Tons of gain, I hear the voicing is similar to the XXX and Ultra series Peaveys. They go cheap as hell anyway, you can't go wrong IMO.

It has the same organic midrange sound as a 5150, but the rockmaster is a lot thinner when you've got the gain knob pulled out. When you pull that knob out, its almost like using a tube screamer. It really thins the distortion out significantly. It really depends on what guitar you use with it.

you have the 120watt peavey poweramp right? does that have the resonance and presence controls on it?

Yes it does. I crank up the resonance all the way with the rockmaster. It certainly helps to chunk the sound up. I usually have to turn it down with other preamps.

ahh ok then, i have the 50 watt version of that poweramp and it has a the controls, just thought that might be why the rockmaster sounded thin lol, anyways hopefully it'll sound less thin if you have the mod done.

My cousin has the Peavey 50/50 poweramp and I think it sounds a lot better than my 120/120. The rockmaster is definitely thin, at least with the gain knob pulled out. I think the mod would do wonders.

What about using something else to boost the gain, not like the tube screamers as they cut some of the bass anyway, but the sd-1 or something?
