Periphery new songon MetalSucks

Ohhhh I love this.
Go on SS.org and nearly everyone is saying how great it is.
Come on here and everyone hates it

General guideline for music in this era is that if the majority like it, chances are it's crap. We have a real boner for derivative, rehashed, chaotic and directionless music. This board certainly likes its share of that too.

Cant wait to hear this. Sounds like it may put the final nail in the periphery coffin for me.

Haha, my one friend is a SSer.. I always tease him on how lame Periphery are. He bought into the hype initially as one of the Bulb worshippers... then he actually listened to Meshuggah and realized Periphery were well.... not good.

Meshuggah are and always will be the kings of "djent" (urgh, I hate that word).
I used to post a lot at SS.org, but nowhere near as much now, because apart from Meshuggah, I don't really get into too much of the 'djent' stuff, and it seems if you don't listen to 'djent' or tech metal, you don't really fit in too well there. Some of the people there confess to spending about 90 per cent or more of their listening time devoted to listening to metal, and well, I probably don't even spend 50 per cent of my listening time listening to metal anymore, which again makes me feel like I don't really belong there so much.
Although it may be called the Andy Sneap forum, at least here I feel like I'm surrounded by a much higher proportion of people that listen to a really wide range of stuff, as it seems people here actually understand that there are more emotions to music than what metal can provide.

As for Periphery, I don't hate all their music as such, in fact I like the debut album, but the catch being I only really enjoy the instrumental disc now as I happen to think Bulb can write some okay instrumental stuff.
At first I liked Spencer's vocals but over time they began to really grate on me and I really just don't enjoy his voice much at all anymore.

Yes, in my short time around these parts, the community here definitely seems diversified. I think the music Bulb writes can be pretty cool (But yes, the vocals are just flat out bad on the non-instrumental disk) but the instrumental disk still doesn't I don't know... it just doesn't stick out. It doesn't make me automatically nod my head to the rhythms... if that makes any sense.

Most my favorite bands aren't metal, but I am recording a metal album with my friend this summer. Metal is a bit of a loose term - it's going to have the metal tones/production etc but with a lot of post-hardcore and progressive rock influences entwined. I feel this could be a community that would embrace a unique sound, one that at times sacrifices grooves and low riffs for the all important.... MELODY!

Being a metal vocalist is a fucking tough job. It's fine to not like the music, but I think most of the comments in this thread are just bashing a band who finally made it, made by those who didn't. I'm a huge fan of Mastodon even though I've still seen some pretty horrible live vocal performances from them. For example, look at this: ...every other vocal note in that video is out of tune, yet I still dig Mastodon. Sometimes you just have a bad day. If we've had Youtube and a billion camcorders at every gig in the 70s, I bet most of the vocal legends would "blow live" too.

I love Periphery...hard working guys and they've seriously done lots to get to where they are so big props to them!

Bands are so much more than just the performances and all that...it's not simple to decide to replace a member because we're human beings and we build relationships with people. I really respect bands where the members stand by each other and all.

Lots of vocalist from many bands get smashed repeatedly but the bands don't split with them because the chemistry between the members is right and the formula is there.

Practice makes perfect, I'm sure Spencer and the guys are always working hard to improve and there's always so much improvement to go around to all bands and musicians who exist and are in the process of existing!

Cheers!

Hadi

Damn, just damn.

Yeah, that's exactly it - I bash Spencer and Periphery because I'm jealous.

Would I like to be touring like they are and have as many fans? Sure.

Would I take that in return for having a terrible singer and having my albums sound like Periphery's do? Fuck no.

Spencer blows live. Whatever - he also blows on recordings as far as I'm concerned. His growls are weak and have an odd undertone to them, and his cleans are laughably cheesy at best and painfully cringeworthy at worst.

This band had a TON of potential, but it was just squandered by a shit vocalist and a lack of innovation on the production side of things.

This is wishful thinking, at best. Keeping someone around just because he works, chemistry wise, but sucks as far as performances goes is a great way to end up with a singer like Spencer. I'm not saying they should have to put up with crap like they did while Casey was in the band, but they should by no means settle like they did with Spencer.

And if they didn't settle for Spencer... I honestly thought the guys in the band had higher standards than that, although my comments on production contradict that.

The midrange in the guitars for the new track is horrible. They have this really annoying nasal quality that's really distracting.
