*throws tomato at his bitch ass* you asked for it

hah
nu metal is too broad of a genre to like anyway..
a couple "decent" bands in it that shouldn't be thrown in with the other 99.9% of shitty bands considered nu.

you guys could have just voted for nu metal instead of making this thread two pages long and it would have sent the same message

when it comes to metal i prefer death and grindcore.

i listen to too much non-metal stuff to say that those are my favorite types of music. i'm listening to Neil Diamond as i type this.

How is thrash metal amongst the myriad of sub-genres? It's arguably the most highly recognised version of traditional metal.
Emphasis mine. You just answered your question.
It's not metal fans being strange, it's because there is an immense amount of variation within metal, what would be more strange is if we just called everything just "metal",
You don't think 'mallcore' is a bit...excessive? I think it is. Especially if there is little-to-no defining musical descriptions that seperates this certain type of music from its other sub-genres.

And I gotta be honest with you, as my first post explained and has been so far unanswered, I have yet to learn what 'doom metal' and 'metalcore' are supposed to be so I'll probably be referring to these as simply 'metal' until then.

Lastly, I simply disagree. If there is a new sub-genre of metal created, this should be a big deal. It should be 1983-big-deal, not some generic term used to describe the 'metal flavor of the month'.
like you might call the BeeGees and Britney Spears both "pop".
Point taken. Although comparing disco to mallcore is again excessive, in my opinion.

Go to www.metal-archives.com and to a search for musical genre "doom." 2220 results. "Metalcore" yields 424 results. There are a shitload more metalcore bands than that.

Mallcore may not be a valid musical classification, but these two definitely are.
