Playing Opeth songs on guitar...

I think I've figured out the first riff of "the Leper Affinity"... after watching them play it live I noticed mikael didnt move his hand up the fretboard during the first part of it like you have to do with the tabs on the net.. so use an octave on 7th fret A string and hold on to the 10th fret (from the 9th) on the G string... I'm sure this sounds really confusing but you can figure it out

actually its not, it goes from 5:50 to 6:10, mike moves up and down the fretboard like crazy, when i saw it live i couldnt really see exactly what he was doin, but it looked to be something in a 1-3-7 pattern

I getcha

I'm quite new to guitar, I've been playing mostly Metallica and Megadeth. I had a lookie at some Opeth tabs and as of yet, are definately not good enough to play any of them. Maybe it's just me, but Opeth's riffs have a certain level of complexity I would not expect...in fact their songs seem alot harder than any Megadeth tunes...:(

Playing their stuff just makes me feel more of a frustrated musician...god damn it...the composition is fuckin awesome...the ideas are fuckin awesome...and I'm so stupid that I can't create shite like that(well...I haven't been playing for half of my life...that's true too...) But HELL! It makes me go depressive...

     :spin: :spin:

PS: Static..don't worry m8..You'll eventually get there...just don't lose yourself along the way(no limp bizkit covers for u :D )..At first I was only able to play 'tallica and stuff of the like...now I can play some shit...but I'm still weak as I can't compose...BLAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHBLUUUUUUUUUQQQQQQ

/me takes the pills

sorry...much better now...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

D-----3--
A---2----
E-1------1--2

like that?

Where Martin doubles up half a step higher?

Right before the "irish jig" part.

Good point Tenebrae...its the fucking composition thing that they have perfected. It just leaves mortals like us wondering how the fuck we will ever come up with not just songs, but 'pieces' as amazing as those. Mikael is a mastermind at composition...I'm not...:(

Chuck Schuldiner tho, IMO, was the greatest 'composer' of metal...RIP.

It's not that confusing tbh..It's only an 8th note...just like Primordial use and ,amf abuse

D----9---
A----x---
E----7---

8Th note...hurray...you could even let the 5th ring...(the x...the muffled string...just hit it on the 9th fret...power chords are quite easy...Main note...5th...8th...huh?)

/me wonders why the hell did he post this... :?

PS: To Static: Mikael records everything(and I mean EVERYTHING!)..he doesn't scrap a single riff or melodic line...I'm actually working on it...got to get me some way of recording my ideas....

lol ive only been playing for about a year and a half man...opeth is pretty tough..but not too demanding with practice...but they are some really goof riffs sometimes that i can never get...great composers...but not nearly as hard as Death's stuff

It's actually:

D|-----3-------|
A|---2------3--|
E|-1------2----|

then

D|-----4-------|
A|---3------4--|
E|-2------3----|

Mikael goes a step higher along with Mendez, not sure what Peter does though.

actually i dont believe thats right, i mean it sounds good, i've played along with the song several times and it somewhat matches, however, when i saw them live, he was doing some kind of bouncing, could have been the

1
---2
-----3

but i think rather than the

2
--3

that he goes some thing like

7p3 something like this, hope this makes sense, i'm still in the process of trying to make it work

Thats the only riff of the song I don't play...
I'm sure yours is right.....
thing is, once I start to learn a song.....I don't listen to it and soon the riffs start turning into my own variations.
