Porcupine Tree

I love them... heard OF them before Opeth, but never checked them out until i heard about the BWP thingy.

why i like them...

1) atmosphere... listen to Buying New Soul or Collapse Light Into Earth... it's just the kind of thing you can get lost in.

2) they do the "not quite happy, not quite sad" emotion thing.. where you kinda wanna cry, but it might be because you're happy heh hard to explain. I don't like overly sad things, and things that can get an emotional response out of me that ISN'T sadness but gives me the same kinda chills feeling i pay attention to.

3) the layers and subtlety of the songs... small ambient swells you hardly notice, children laughter in the background... ya know, the little things that you only discover months later hehe

4) i just love Steve Wilson's voice, so smooth yet almost "weak" but in a good way. And he comes up with melodies i can't get out of my head.

5) lyrics... i love their lyrics... stuff like "He thought i was cold but i undertand... but for the grace of god goes another man... and i may just waste away from doing nothing, but you're a martyr for even less" or "I got a scar where all my urges bled"

6) dynamics... this kinda goes hand in hand with the ambient swells and production subtleties. These guys have MOMENTUM in their songs, they go places.

Not trying to convert anyone, but if someone asks why i like P-Tree, this is what i would tell them :p

I really wanna get Stupid Dream, I like the songs that I've heard off it more than In Absentia, but I can't find it anywhere.
I can always order it with my mom's credit card, but I do that so much, I'm beginning to get tired of asking her, I feel like I'm bugging her.

I'm not a fan. They aren't particularly original, they're just one band of an entire genre. Seems like Opeth fans go gaga over them simply because of the Mikael-Steven connection. They aren't bad, but I don't see what all the fuss is about and no one's ever been able to explain it to me satisfactorily, though I'm sure some of you will try. :p

yeah i kind of agree there, well not on everything but it just seems wierd that people are flocking to them like theres something extra special there. oh well.

im actualy surprised i'd never heard of this BRITISH band, living in BRITAIN, i mean anything BRITISH here gets over hyped for some reason. anywho i downloaded ''4 chords...'' after the BWP thingy and i bought lightbulb sun, which was cheap as chips. blatent Ok Computer rip-off but i liked it, after all i was (and still do) listen to music like this before i starting listening to metal.

ok, so heres of the top of my head the Ok Computer comparisons, theres loads more but i cant think of them right now....

the childrens voices in the background at the end of the first track....guess who else has that at the end of the track...

Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled - reminds me of Fitter Happier, well more than reminds would be more correct.

i'll find some more when i listen to the album...

i guess we can all agree they're no Smashing Pumpkins and be done. PT are good, well very good but theres more than a few, lets say 'similar' for arguments sake bands i like more. still good enough for me to be going to see them in March.

oh, oh, oh... one favour, d/l 'The Fear' by 'Travis' (yes i know, but dont be put off by the name) and tell me you dont think its good, i dare you

I recently picked up the Stars Die boxset (well, two disc set) and I like it a lot. Reminds me of The Orb.

Two completely different things...the voice heard on Last Chance is the leader of the Heaven's Gate cult, and is used to offset the instrumental section and not to create an unsettling mood by itself...

I think they are great. IMO they sound similiar to Opeth, just without the growling and length. I had never heard about PT until I read a revolver with Mikael mentioning this band, then I saw a video of theirs (Strip The Soul). Honestly I didn't know who the hell Steve Wilson was until the revolver mag.

i liked opeth better before they got involved with steven wilson. he's basically a good producer (i.e. sound quality) but BWP and deliverance sound too 'produced' if you ask me. also, since steven wilson is involved, opeth's music sounds less original and more porcupine tree-like, which isn't bad thing, but PT just sounds too 'girlie', i don't know, mikael's low clean voice sounded much better than his higher voice on the more recent records. take a fair judgement: apart from the dissonant outro riff, that song just IS Porcupine Tree, with its pathetic sound and lullaby feeling over it (yawn).
i gonna shut up now.

 I understand you completely! I dont care for Fair Judgement at all. For the "heavy" album, that song really slows it down too much IMO.

It's true that there are PT influences in Opeth's music, and that the new PT is influenced by the fact that S.Wilson has clearly discovered metal...
I think that, thanks to this mix, we got now two great & mature bands!!!!!:spin:
