I think that's similar to a phenomenon known as "ostention", where an urban legend truly happens AFTER it's begun circulating. "Pseudo-ostention" is when someone deliberately fulfills an urban legend. It sounds like this guy genuinely wanted his songs to be played, so I'd say "ostention".
