Progressive rock/metal

Alchemist is amazing. Organasm is an outstanding and VERY original album. I love prog, Riverside, Tiles, Threhold, Flower Kings, Jadis and many more.

Ozric Tentacles and to a certain extent Yes are the only Progressive rock bands I really bother listening to, but I haven't explored the genre much. As for prog. metal, it depends what you want to classify as prog., so i wont bother.

King Crimson is my #1 band so far. I've still got a whole life ahead of me, I'll probably find something better. I love tool, meshuggah, latter day death, pink floyd, magma, tangerine dream, queen, ect. I do not like prog that is pretensious, unless they can seriously back it up.

Prog metal is my primary genre. I like almost all of them:
Dream Theater
Anathema
Symphony X
Indukti
Deadsoul Tribe
etc etc..
though Porcupine Tree is not metal IMO...
More Psychedelic Space Rock/ Art Rock. They never seem to stick to a particular genre, like Rush.
I also love classic progressive music:
Yes
Genesis
King Crimson
Camel
Jethro Tull
etc etc...

Add ELP and Gentle Giant and you have excellent taste in my opinion.

Nice taste. I like just about all of them.

I recently got into Indukti and I can't stop listening to them. Amazing band.

spastic ink/ron jarzombek/bobby jarzombek
crimson
rush

gordian knot (when there's no singing)

Stuff with some prog in it, from Floyd to Opeth, Radiohead to Atheist, is my main listening pleasure these days....

I love all of those bands too, but I don't know Indukti. I'll find out about them later. Love Sylvan also

i'm actually writing a prog/thrash/death song right now

but bands i like are:
Dream Theater
Tool
Porcupine Tree
some of November's Doom i actually consider proggish
Opeth
Akercocke if you consider them prog
Rush
Jethro Tull
Nevermore i consider power prog
Into Eternity
Symphony X
Green Carnation
Amorphis
does Pyramaze count or should i take them off the list?

Im a big Prog fan too, and im into some of the jazzier fusion stuff as well, like Focus, and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

But what do you guys think of The Mars Volta? not so much Metal, but for sure prog. Sometimes very strange, but i really really like them. I can hear a huge King Crimson influence in their sound.

Anyone care to explain why King's X is considered prog by a lot of ppl? i like them, but i just dont hear how they're progressive.

Amorphis- Doom death metal/Melodic Rock

Nevermore- power

November's Doom- Gothic Doom

I love prog but rather prog rock than prog metal - prog metal bands tend to sound very similar and have no balance between technique and quality of the compositions, the only prog metal bands I listen to are Pain Of Salvation and Opeth, sometimes early Dream Theater but i's rare and the main reason is sentimental because I used to be their fan several years ago..

My favourite prog rock bands are King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Osanna, Ange, Henry Cow, Mandalaband and many more.

Later Amorphis dabbles in progressive metal and rock. Elegy would probably be progressive metal and Tuonela onward would be prog rock. Eclipse is alittle more heavy than the last but still not really anything to do with death metal or doom.

Edge of Sanity 'crimson 2' is Dan Swano's moontoower are progressive.
