Rahan's latest series of polls showed that we here at the almighty Opeth forum feel that the best three albums are MAYH, SL and BP. These are, respectively, Opeth's 3rd, 4th and 5th albums.

So I got to thinking (I know, bad idea...) and I figure a lot of bands need a few albums to a) mature musically, b) establish band members and c) find their "sound". For Opeth, this would be Orchid and Morningrise.

Now, don't get me wrong, these are both great albums. But they are missing something. The word that comes to mind for me is cohesion? Whatever it is, these albums sound less confident then the big three. Plus, they were young and constantly changing members, so it was hard for them to find their sound.

So, anyway, this post is about looking at other bands' 3-4-5 albums (not counting EP's or live albums) and making comments on them. I'm not saying these are the best albums from each band (but in several cases, like Opeth's, they are) I'm just looking to make general comparisons.

By the way, before I get to my list, I was originally going to do this as a poll, but then I realized that I would be forcing you to pick from bands that I like. This way, hopefully, I can learn about bands I've never heard of before.

So, without further ado: the list.

MY FAVORITES:

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast / Piece of Mind / Powerslave

-- Fucking great. After Beast, they finally got the perfect line-up (thank GOD Bruce and Adrian came back). I know a lot of people like Killers or the debut album better, but these three are fantastic in their own right. Beast is one of the top 5 metal albums of all-time, Mind has some duds, but overall is strong. And Powerslave especially shows the maturity in songwriting.

Slayer - Reign in Blood / South of Heaven / Seasons in the Abyss

-- Amazing. Speed metal at its finest. Reign is also one of the top 5 metal albums of all time, and maybe the greatest in the speed metal genre. Again, I love Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits, but they are not as tight as these three. Heaven and Seasons are two of my favorites, and show Slayer maturing in their songwriting and playing.

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality / Volume 4 / Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

-- Classic. Again, most of their overplayed songs are on Black Sabbath and Paranoid, but these three albums boast a lot of classics too. After Sabotage, though, Black Sabbath should have been in a plane crash because they've given us nothing worthwhile since (sorry to disappoint all those Ronnie James Dio fans out there...)

Sepultura - Beneath the Remains / Arise / Chaos AD

-- Less popular, but one of my favorites. I love Remains and Arise. Chaos AD is a bit weird becuase they were getting into tribal music, but still, it is a fantastic record. This band went straight downhill the minute Max left the band.

Metallica - Master of Puppets / And Justice for All / Metallica

-- Oh crap, they made the list. Obviously Puppets and Justice are carrying the weight here. And, compared to the shit they've been shoveling at us since the mid-nineties, the Black Album really isn't that bad. Still, I wonder where they'd be now if Cliff hadn't died in '86.

Megadeth - So Far, So Good... So What! / Rust In Peace / Countdown to Extinction

-- Probably should be on the Honorable Mention list, but I think I spent most of 8th grade listening to Rust In Peace, so it has a place in my heart. Countdown was Megadeth's Black Album and since then, I haven't been listening much.

HONORABLE MENTION:

Anthrax - Spreading the Disease / Among the Living / State of Euphoria

Testament - Practice What You Preach / Souls of Black / The Ritual

Overkill - Under the Influence / The Years of Decay / Horrorscope

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime / Empire / Promised Land (one of my favorite albums)

NON-METAL HONORABLE MENTION

Rush - Caress of Steel / 2112 / A Farewell to Kings

Led Zeppelin - III / IV / Houses of the Holy

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, that's my list. Comment if you like, but please add your own favorites too. If I think of any others I'll add them.

By the way, if you got the Pythagorean reference (3-4-5), good for you! You posess a high school education and actually paid attention in math class.

Yeah, I have thought about something very similar, ut not quite the same. Relating Metallica's albums to Opeth's albums.

Kill em All/Orchid - Killer debuts, both really estalished the bands fairly well.

Ride The Lightning/Morningrise - Sort of like follow ups to previous albums, showing that they are great and consistent somewhat with making good music.

Master of Puppets/MAYH - The third album always seems to be the groundbreaker, and these are no exceptions, MAYH really opened up Opeth's sound, and MoP was just nationally acclaimed since it's recording.

And Justice/Still Life - Perfect follow ups to previous albums, arguably the last good AMAZING albums the bands made, to me like their peaks in music, and sadly, after albums such as these it can only go downhill.

Metallica/BWP - Good stuff, but not necessarily what you expected after the previous album, many fans somewhat let down and go to the older albums.

Load/Reload/Damnation/Deliverance - Band trying to still write good material, but it doesn't turn out too well, it's sorta catchy stuff, but nothing like the good old days.

I don't know, Im sure (knowing this board) people will come in here and disagree/bitch with this post and the thread starters' post, but this is just somewhat of a generalization that I have made.

I was gunna say Judas Priest, but I still havent fucking heard Hell Bent for Leather.

Maybe...

The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity / Procession to the Infraworld / Conjuration of the Spectral Empire

-- Yuh, this is fucking right. Procession isnt quite as good as the other two, but Deathcult and Conjuration are two of the most intense and remarkable death metal albums I've ever heard.

in flames... if you count the EPs, you have: Whoracle / Black-Ash Inheritance / Colony
Nightwish - Wishmaster / Century Child / Once (they get better with ever release in my opinion)
Dark Tranquillity - The Mind's I / Projector / Haven - dont know much about TMI but the other 2 are fucking good albums

I think this is a pretty cool and original thread.
Although I don't have much to say about the topic.... I want to reiterate that Orchid and Morningrise are in many ways actually superior to later works.

Allright, one comment: Rush's 3-4-5 series were incredible pieces of craftsmanship that, to me, are all on the same level. I think from there, they stepped it up another notch, sonically and "progressively", until the mid 90s, when they got a little too boring.
End of transmission.

I just downloaded character by Dark Tranquillity (Ill buy it dont worry) and all I can say is its fucking INCREDIBLE. Seriously its so so good mmmmmmmmmm..........

Have to say that Jester Race should be included, its just an incredible album.

Kreator - Terrible Certainty, Extreme aggression, coma of souls

Very good triad of music.

Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy, Dreaming Neon Black, Dead Heart in a Dead world

DEFINTELY! [In memory is the 2nd(important) release]

Bathory - Under the Sign of the black mark, blood fire death, hammerheart

I agree here as well...I love the previous 2 black metal albums, but these are real unique and innovative for the time.

enough for now

About three months ago I listened to them a lot. Too much. I don't understand why they keep playing in C#minor. Handy for tabbers, but boring for people that really like listening their cd's thoroughly. However, can't wait to see them live. Their music rules pretty much in live situations I think.

On topic: Pfft, can't find one.. Their seem to be a lot of bands who started right a way with a kick ass album (Emperor, to name one)

YES!

YES!

Also, I'll have to add Sodom - Persecution Mania / Agent Orange / Better Off Dead

This is of course, counting "In the Sign of Evil" as a full length (even though it's not).

Thanks for the kind words, but the thread seems to have burned out quite quickly. One other I thought of...

At The Gates would have a great trio with Terminal Spirit Disease, Slaughter of the Soul and the next album had they not disbanded. Slaughter was one of my first death metal albums and it still gets heavy play today.

Free beer if you rescue this thread. :kickass:
