PZM incorporated into drums?

Loren Littlejohn

Lover of all boobage.
I know it's been brought up briefly but never in any detail. I was thinking of throwing some pressure zone mics somewhere when I track drums next month (2 of them). Any suggestions? Where do people normally put them? The surface will be hard (the floor, or wall ).

I can't remember the company (I think AKG but yeah... don't remember if that is even right).

But anyhow if/when you use these (in combination of room mics and OH mics) where do you put them, are there major phase issues etc...?

In that IN FLAMES article, they had them on the floor under the drums, this is also how they're arranged in BFD I think.
I would say try that and if it sucks balls, use them as room/ambient mics.

See I figure if they suck I'll scrap the tracks since I have a pair of earthworks that I will be using for the room.

Thanks though that was my first thought for placement.

A lot of people around here stick them on the walls. They're kind of nice room mics. I know some people put them on the glass between the control room and the live room, although I've never tried that myself.

i've seen two of them used as ambient mics on the floor for drums. just use something like string or mic cable to measure equal distance from them to the snare to take care of phase issues. they did indeed sound good that way. i've heard of people using them in kick drums, but never heard and example of that.

I use a PZM kickmick, Sennheiser e901. Placed inside the kickdrum on something soft like piece of foam or a towel

I was in a session with a guy who took two of them, put them on the floor (facing the floor, not the ceiling) about 10 feet in front of the kit, maybe five feet apart. Sure, using traditional room mics adds a lot of ambience and can add some depth, but you can get some awesome low-end action using PZM's in this way.
