Questions to Biomechanical

I beg to differ. They all suck and everyone should drink fanta.

Btw, nice pic of 'pepsi treason' - very amusing.

You're all wrong. Here's the best beverage of them all :

You know I'm right. Admit it. You know it. Let go. I win. /\oO/\

<threadhijackingmode=off>

Every musician has a pre-gig warm up mode : scales, push-ups, drinking 2 1/2 glasses of warm Evian water, running around pissing their pants with fear, ritual sacrifice to the almighty god of plastic forks, random boobie grabbage...

So, here are my questions : what does the 'chanical backstage room look / sound / smell like when the big beardy guy with the leather jacket knocks on the door and goes "5 minutes till stage, boys" ?

When you guys went on stage for the first time in your life... when was it ? What was it ? How did it go ? What did you learn from it ?

Do any of you guys have some kind of weird ritual that you H4VE to perform / lucky charm you HAV3 to make sure you have in your pocket (or around your foot if it's a sock) before you go on stage ?

That's because you didn't drink belgian beer yet.

As far as Coke/Pepsi are concerned, I'd go for Coke and not Pepsi if it's in a cocktail. My favorite Coke is Lemon Coke, though.. (and Dr. Peppawr, but you can't find it in France).

Here's some equipment questions for the band:

What equipment did you use for the recording of both albums? I'm particularly interested in the guitar side of things (I saw in a pic for the Eight Moons sessions a mesa-boogie was being used, as well as a fender shaped ESP), but there are all sorts of players here, as well. I'd also like to know how Matt was able to get such a powerful and full sound (I hate the tin-can sound) on Empires of the Worlds.

Warning, kiddies: techno-babble ahead! :D

Hey man. I always try and warm up before a gig. I use a Pandora PX4. I simply have a metronome running, and mainly play Chromatics and Modes to get my hands warmed up. If I don't warm up before a gig, I'm Fucked! Apart from that I'm usually just insanely pumped up and excited about the gig.

First time on stage for me was back in 1996 at The Square in Harlow. I was playing with my first ever band called "Rezistance" (Now i've left myself open for a beating). I was totally nervous, but the adrenaline rush I got from being on stage was awesome. Infact, I still get the same rush with Biomechanical.

lol! No nothing like that man. I think the only thing you need luck for at a gig is your equipment not going wrong, or some idiot knocking a pint over your pedals and blowing your whole rig.

And on another subject, my favourite beer is Czech beer. But having said that, I've yet to try Belgian Beer.:D

Hey man. For Eight Moons we used a mixture of gear. The guitars were recorded using a Marshall JMP-1, a Line6 POD and as you saw, my Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier.

For Empires we used the Line6 POD XT. We spent a long time working on the sound. In the end, we used the Line6 Insane patch with the gain backed off a bit. We then used a combination of 2 different EQ's. One guitar was set up With the treble frequencies backed off, and we turned the bass up a little bit to get the tight chunky warm sound. The other guitar was set with the high frequencies louder, and we then backed the bass off. This sound had quite a bite to it. When the 2 sounds were combined, it sounded awesome. After that, Andy Sneap got his hands on it and made it as it is on the album.

Guitar wise, I used my customised PRS Custom 22, which at the time still had the PRS Dragon II pickups. (I've now replaced those with EMG's). I also used a Gordon Smith 7 string fitted with an EMG 707. I'll let Jamie tell you about his guitars.

Hope this didn't bore the shit out of you too much:D Take it easy.

Chris.

speaking of recording do you guys record in london and if you do is it one of those places you go in and just see random people sitting there, or is it like a nice studio? :loco:

I think I already asked him about I don't know if he mentioned what he uses but I would imagine it would be Ibanez and ESP's, amiright?

Usually I have my guitar around my neck & head down practicing. I run through some of the trickier phrases in the Bio tracks & solo's.Then I run through general shred shapes picking/legato/sweeping/tapping. I find that if I spend about 45 minutes doing this before I hit the stage, my hands are warm & pull off everything that is needed for the gig. This also puts you in a confident state of mind. Then I can't wait to do what I do with a bunch of cool guys on stage & the crazy Mofo's in the audience.

I can't actually remember my first time on stage.I've been gigging & performing since my childhood so it's something that I've always done.In my early years I used to get butterflies in my stomach & feel a lot of adrenalin before I got on stage. As you perform more & more you learn to channel that energy into a controlled adrenalin that you can store & save for when you hit the stage. Then if you get pre gig adrenalin in anyway you know you're gonna kick ass on stage

Nah no lucky charms or rictuals.Just a good pre gig practice session & to know all my gear is all working is all I need to do. From there onwards I'm just looking forward to havin' a blast with the crowd

Chris summed up the amp side of things for the recordings. For my guitars I use a custom shop ESP 6 string (the fender shaped one) with EMG pickup's, my purple swirl Ibanez Jem with the stock Dimarzio pickups & an Ibanez universe for 7 string stuff (also stock universe pickups).

Hi there,

The first album was done on a studio in London,
My studio was located in a building with a TV broadcasting company.

It was cool 'cause after a certain time we were all by our selves.

Then I moved the studio to where I am now so it's totally private so no people walking in and out :)

Chris and Jamie summed up the amp set up. The only additional thing I used on the production was an Aphex 204 exciter.
I find the pods very narrow and that unit gave the recordings a bit more scope.

Then as Chris said Andy Sneap opened them in his set up and EQed them further to the result you can hear on the album

We decided to trigger the drums. This way we could have access to any sound we wanted to use. It's a common practice nowadays. So the sounds on the Empires is the result of the recording sessions I did with Matt and the work of Andy Sneap choosing and refining the sounds through his equipment.

Not quite, i'm not the biggest fan of beer either. I much prefer rose wine. Call me a poof if you want Iconoclast, I don't give a toss.
