Quorthon died today

anyone heard anything new?

I had heard this before, but someone reminded me - Wasn't Quorthon's name Pugh Rodgenfeldt (or something like that)?

Legendary video director and founding BATHORY member Jonas Åkerlund has spoken to Sweden's Expressen newspaper about the passing of BATHORY mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg from what is believed to be heart failure. Forsberg, who was known to have been battling heart problems for years, was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday (June 7). He was 39 years old.

"It's so sad. He had much more to offer," Åkerlund said.

Jonas, who formed the band with Forsberg in the early '80s, went on to have a successful video-directing career, having worked with the likes of METALLICA, PRODIGY, MADONNA and U2.

"[BATHORY came onto the scene] extremely early," Åkerlund said. "People like Marilyn Manson, Billy Corgan and the members of METALLICA have all come up to me and have told me that they listened to BATHORY."

According to Åkerlund, it was Thomas Forsberg's creativity that made the band such an influence on so many younger metal acts.

"[Quorthon] had a high cult status," Jonas said. "He wasn't interested in attention, he just wanted to play his music."

I still prefer Hammerheart to the single riff Burzum and Darkthrone epics. Just an opinion. However, i really do need to listen to more Graveland.

For gods sake...NO!
Pugh Rogefeldt is a swedish rock/prog musician in his 50's. He did a record called Hammarhjärta (Hamemrheart) in swedish and that is probably where the confusion in lords of chaos stems from. They fixed it in the new version of the book.

What the fuck?! No! I want this to be an elaborate hoax! What the fuck?! What about that new album?!?! :yell:

Fucking hell man, Bathory was one of my earlier Metal finds, my first Black Metal band. I remember all that so well...going onto the Denom & Leather website and randomly stumbling across their entry, my 14-year old mind was totally skullfucked by what seemed like the most extreme discovery of all time. I went onto the Twilight website and digested everything I could off there. The tiny clips on there were really, like, fucking "Woah, what the fuck?!". A short while later I got the In Conspiracy With Satan tribute and Blood On Ice, and Hammerheart a month after that. Got hold of everything I could gradually after that. Yeah man, I remember checking out Bathory. The floodgates just opened after that. I used that tribute album as a template for where to start looking next - Nifelheim and Gehennah were more of my early BM bands on account of that.

Fucking hell, you don't expect something like that to come out of nowhere. Man...I'm up for contributing reviews if they're wanted at all. I got everything except Octagon, Reqiuem and Nordland II. I got a review of Destroyer Of Worlds and maybe Blood On Ice too on metal-archives.com, could dig 'em up if y'want.

\m/ R.I.P. \m/

Cool. Unless you want to write something new in light of his passing. You know, the tone might differ...up to you. I'll publish either way.

I checked my reviews of them and to be honest they're way to casual for a professional job. I could do a Blood On Ice review no probs, Destroyer Of Worlds if the numbers need to be made up but in all honesty I find that album quite dull and wouldn't fancy sitting through it again.

I'd be up for reviewing the tribute album if that was wanted. Something different on the side and I know it like the back of my ass.

I had my doubts until now. Nemtheanga, who is a huge Bathory fan, just verified it through close sources. I was holding onto a speck of hope, and now it's gone. life sucks...

FYI: Nasheim will probably participate on a tribute tape dedicated to Bathory, to be released on Total Holocaust Records.
Oh yeah, I saw the heads-up about that. That would be a welcome contribution.

While I definitely qualify as non-staff these days, I'd be really honored if I could do a Bathory review for this occasion.

Ali? Is it cool? I'd like to do "Under the Sign..." if it's ok with Erik.

I listened to my 6 Bathory CDs within the past few days. Twilight of the Gods still owns them all IMO. "Blood and Iron", the title track, the breathtaking "To Enter This Mountain", and the closing "Hammerheart" just propel that album beyond anything he's done.

I also forgot how badass Blood on Ice was.

I can't get enough of One Rode to Asa Bay. That whole Hammerheart album kicks ass, but I almost always go to the last track and listen to it first, then the whole album, then Asa Bay a third time.

The funny thing is that Qourthon probably wouldn't appreciate a tribute.
I've heard from a bunch of different Swedes that Qourthon was really upset about the one on Hellspawn. I think it was this legal/money thing, but I'm not sure.

Also, since you like Hammerheart so much (as I do), you might want to check out ...And so the Night Became by Aeternus. Equally epic vibe, but with a folk feel as opposed to viking per se.

Yes. That's one of my favourite records ever, and is even one of the three records that got me into extreme metal in the first place (together with Dimmu Borgir's "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" and Satyricon's "Dark Medieval Times". "Warrior Of The Crescent Moon" gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

Can it be a fact that Qourthon WOULD appreciate a tribute? I mean you can't really ask him?
As a fact: Quorthon DESERVES a tribute!!
Maybe he wouldn`t enjoy people making MONEY out of his death. BUT he for sure wouldn`t mind his fans REMEMBERING him in one way or any other! Because he always had a close relation to his fans...
There`s nothing wrong in keeping the memory of him alive!
