From what I gathered, Adrian always had more aspirations on being a band leader/main songwriter, and so forth. He'd spent so many years trying so hard to get his band Urchin to get a break, and he was definitely the band leader/frontman of that band. He'd finally hit rock bottom with Urchin and was pretty despondent about the whole thing, when the opening in Maiden occurred after Stratton was axed. By the time "Somewhere..." and "Seventh Son..." were being done, he found himself writing alot more and alot of it was either not suitable for Maiden or wasn't being accepted by the band. So it became inevtiable that he was going to have to move towards a solo career. I think it was just something he really had to get out of his system and prove to himself.
