Recomend bands! (Kata-sounding or not)

Just a few bands I'd like to add.

First off, The Notwist are indeed quite nice.

I'm currently listening to Fliehende Stürme, which is what we over here would call "wave punk", or something like that. It's basically punky-wavy guitar music, but very melancholic & full of frustration and despair. Brilliant band!

If you want to get a good impression, try their album "Fallen".

Whilst you're having a look at Fliehende Stuerme, you might also want to try out Substance of Dream.

There is a new "fields of the nephilim" or "nephilim" album coming out in november! Been waiting a number of years for this one, cant wait!

No one mentioned Cult of Luna yet, huh?
guess most of ya have heard them, for those who haven't go check them out.. "Fetus-position metal".. or noisecore :)

Argh, Cult of Luna. Of course, how could I forget them? Callisto is also an excellent band, a little bit the same way like CoL but they use stuff like violins, saxophones and stuff in their songs. I'm bitter for missing CoL's, Callisto's and Swallow the Sun's tour called 'Deathroit'. Almost as high class star team as Katatonia, Opeth and Novembre years ago.

i don't listen to shape because they are too much depressing for me at this moment

i second this. add that shape of despair is probably one of the most difficult bands i ever came across to listen to (not only in doom/metal). each time i try listen to them, i find it all too depressive... it really takes over hand and controls you... it could be, that many doesnt hear what i hear, as music is individual. it affects each and one of us differently, depending on where we are mentally. but thumbs up to shape of despair for clearly being masters of the heaviest autumn soundtrack so far.

For your information, I feel the same thing (music taking over hand and controlling me) when I listen to Brave Murder day from the beginning to the end. This album as something very evilsih and hypnotical in it which makes me feel unease when it comes to an end...
Concerning the most depressing song I know, "Dear Sun" from October Tide is still the one for me. It just takes my breath away...and feel almost like being dead at the last chord.

Exactly, I also feel like that when listening to the incredible coldness and desperation of Brave Murder Day, especially the song Day is fatal for anyone's happiness. Also Discouraged Ones is one of such records, so compelling, there's no escape.

Anathema's Alternative 4 too...

Qiuet world has a strong effect on me. I tend to feel a bit shit after listening to that song. Although i love listening to it, which is odd.

I've found a lot of Katatonia stuff too depressing to listen to sometimes, actually...For some reason, Dancing December really gets to me as does Distrust...I actually found the latter more depressing when I thought the lyrics were "I want to be forgotten, I want you to forget" But when I found out they were "I want to be forgotten, I want you to forgive" It seems a lot less bleak :p

it's strange when people do great music, but one feels unable to answer to its call because it makes you feel sad. the same happens with some old sopor aeternus and of course... early lacrimas profundere:cry:. on a more emotional level, eva cassidy is pretty much lethal when you are having sentimental turmoils.

and yeah, Day... ouch... on the same stance, Gone... ouch ouch. Have passed so many moments with katatonia as my life's soundtrack, i still remember seeing a review about tonight's decision, feeling so identified with songs as “I am nothing”, “a darkness coming”… at some bleak, desolated and passive moment of my life… I was katatonia. Thanks J

Well, I'm going to jump in with a few things not Metal.

I would check out the following bands/albums:

Gridlock - 'Further' & 'Trace'. These are two phenomenal albums. I would start with Further, and then move on to Trace. Ambient, industrial meets IDM, where the ambient synth tries to pull you away and the drums lock you in place. Interesting effect. Definitely albums to listen to in a sitting, as they are such singular pieces. Wonderful stuff.

Mum - 'Finally We Are No One'. This is Icelandic pastoral electronic glitch pop(I use that word with much reservation) featuring twin sisters who sound like breathy dolls singing. The beauty of mum is that the sads are sad, and the happies/contents are happy/content, but the difference between the music is so small, really highlighting to me the duality of every emotion, and how the shifts and nuances between emotions are really just little twinges and turns of feeling, just how something affects you. A very good friend of mine summed up this album (upon first listen, it was on while we just were lying on my bed late one night) as 'what a relationship sounds like'. I think she's right.

Lamb - 'What Sound'. A very good trip-hop album. The interesting thing about them is their use of percussion in songs such as What Sound and Sweetheart. Interesting use of music stops and swells to create percussion, slightly more industrial while less alienating than other trip-hop notables such as Portishead or Sneaker Pimps (6 Underground notwithstanding). Plus the song Gabriel could make me cry if I listened to it long enough.

Bowery Electric - 'Lushlife'. Again trip-hop, more drone based. Just check out the songs Lushlife and Saved. Very good listens.

Suicide Commando - 'Mindstrip'. Just listen to Love Breeds Suicide. Just a great song, terror-EBM, almost an electronic interpretation of death growls. I hear the hurt and release when he screams 'love breeds suicide', and the pain with lines like, 'you were the reason for living... you were the searchlight for the living... why did it end? why did it end?" Just resounds in me. The entire terror-ebm genre is justified and exemplified in this one track. Then listen to 'Raise your God' and 'Body Count Proceed'.

Andrew Bird/Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire - 'Weather Systems', 'The Mysterious Production of Eggs', 'The Swimming Hour'. The first two are by Andrew Bird, the third one is under the Bowl of Fire name. Really cool stuff, I would suggest just checking it out. Find songs like "action.adventure" from Weather Systems and "11:11" and "Why?" from the Swimming Hour.

I could keep going forever, but these are some interesting listens, especially if you don't normally listen to this stuff.

gridlock formless is great yes, if yis like older autechre and stuff

isis are a great band yes, check them out at www.sgnl05.com
tho kata members will maybe find cult of luna better cos theyre swedes haha

neurosis are masters but i doubt how many kata fans could cope with their atmosphere.

if you ask me shape of despair is zero compared to neurosis strength and dynamics and the overall effect
(tho after shape of despair youre mesmerised, after neurosis yer blown away yet hypnotised)

Shape of Despair on the other hand I don't think all that highly of... They kind of bore me :p Rather good band, but they have absolutely nothing on i.e. Skepticism & Thergothon.

thats funny since i hold the exact opposite opinion. in my world, skepticism and thergothon are dead boring while shape of despair has everything those two lack. again, i guess we all view darkness and depressive music very differently.
