Recommend obscure prog bands

I haven't seen anyone mention Wuthering Heights recently...I don't know who I would compare them to, but I do know the vocalist reminds me of Dio, and I find the music to be pretty unique. Their last album, Far From The Madding Crowd was one of the best in 2004, in my opinion. Think speed metal meets folk music, and you might get some sort of an idea.

YES YES YES!!

I tried to spread the word but noone would listen to me :(

Far from the madding crowd is one of the best albums overall, ever, imo.

EDIT: oooouh!
Some news for ye all ...

The new album "The Shadow Cabinet" has been composed and pre-recorded by Erik. The album will include 12 songs (of which 2 are meant to be bonus tracks). Here are the song titles:

1. Demon Desire
2. Beautifool
3. The Raven
4. Faith - Apathy Divine Part 1
5. Envy
6. Snow - Apathy Divine Part 2
7. Sleep
8. I Shall Not Yield
9. Reason ... ?
10. Carpe Noctem - Seize The Night
11. Midnight Song
12. Shadow Of A Gipsy

"Shadow Of A Gipsy" is a cover version of the Danish prog-rock band ACHE - originally released in 1971 on the album "Green Man".

Right now the plan is for the band to begin rehearsing the songs, and the recordings will start early March.

In FftMC, I think they forgot the proggy approach of masterpieces such as Dreamwalker or A Sinner's Confession and included tons and tons of 'folkiness' lol rather excessive, imo... I was so immensely proud when I discover this group, a few years ago, but their latest was a bit of a let down.
Still longing for the new cd, though.

Yup!

I really liked the "folkiness" of Far from the Madding Crowd, I can't see how there can ever be too much bagpipe! Seriously though, I was pretty stoked when I saw that they actually have a website these days and work on the new album continues to move along. Can't wait for that one.

so many replies here are really hurting my head so I stopped reading and i'll just reply that this thread was a great idea and i appreciate it. for example...

Symphony X + Adagio = Time Requiem
2 STREAMING FULL SAMPLES:
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1789

it's quite simple really, if you like band a and b, then you should like band c. i knew i liked SX and Adagio, so I checked out that Time Requiem sample and naturally I enjoyed. simple, quick and no stuffing around on google. i don't comprehend how people can see this as a waste of time, useless or somehow against their principles. (probably been said 10x already but i had to stop reading).

if i can think of some of my own i'll be sure to post.

It's all good. Recording will be extremely challenging though, I'm still not good enough to fluently play those songs... Claude is an insanely good songwriter though so I'm not worried, what did you think of the songs?

cool stuff, i dig it.
i don't have any "completed" stuff to post yet so here's wasting another post :erk: i'm very picky about my music and often end up playing back a track and thinking "i hate this part, i hate that part, that needs to go" etc. will post my site/etc. when i've got something polished. 6 or 7 songs in the works, but i can never make up my mind on the other instrument's parts

i guess i could do this:
Nightingale + recent Katatonia + Riverside = (see sig :tickled: )

The most obscure prog artist in my opinion is Conrad Simon. He's a virtuoso guitarist with the best songwriting skills imaginable. Unfortunately, he's a local and I can't find any of his songs on the internet. I can't even find his albums for sale! BUT HOLY CRAP I WISH YOU COULD ALL HEAR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's definetly comparable to LTE, probably even better!!! AAAAHH!

I used to talk to Conrad a bit on ICQ we were introduced by a few people in a tight knit guitar player circle ... we used to trade a few of our recorded playing samples way back probably 10 years ago. He was definitly a decent player back then .. I had a bunch of his stuff on my cpu at one time.. but with reformats and so forth ive lost it all... and since I havent used ICQ for probably 8 years ive lost all contact with him. We actually juggled meeting once at a Vinnie Moore guitar clinic in Halifax , Nova Scotia ( 3 hours from me) but we both pulled out because of work. All in all a very nice guy and very talented .. Just found it interesting to see his name again.. I see your from N.B. also Mr.Fast.

He did at one time have 3-4 songs on some MP3 sight... cant remember if it was MP3.com or not.. was a long time ago so my memory fails me. I also noticed hes been a guest columnist on Chops from hell..

Correct. And it's awesome that you know him, not many people respond when I mention the name Conrad Simon anywhere. I talked to him via email recently and sent me 2 of his recordings, they rule to a very large extent.

OK, even if i don't like the math stuff in this topic, i will add some names for you to find out.

Platitude (very melodic power/progressive) http://www.platitude.net/

Section A (guitarist Torben Enevoldsen's project, very melodic indeed, with hard rock touches here and there) http://www.torbenenevoldsen.com/home.htm

Pagan's Mind (one of my favorites. A very huge sounding band. And do i need to say "very melodic" :) ) http://www.pagansmind.com/

Chrome Shift (Prog. band from Norway, especially shines with his singer) http://www.chromeshift.dk/

Everon (German prog. kings in my opinion.) http://www.everon.de/

Anubis Gate (Hailing from Norway, this band is really tight with crunchy guitar sounds.) http://www.anubisgate.com/indexAG.html

Lord of Mushrooms (French prog. band, with a high sense of melody. Quite catchy music.) http://loloprog.free.fr

Sphere of Souls (with ex-Sun Caged singer, they will release the debut in March. Listen to their samples.) http://www.sphereofsouls.com/
