(these guys just played for me at Nightmare fest II in San Antonio, TX, I was very impressed with their new vocalist, She was a beautiful and powerful young lady barely 5' 2" with BIG vocal pipes! :headbang:

Check out Power's Court if you like epic power metal. Their new album is a concept album called The Red Mist of Endenmore. There is a companion medieval horror novella that goes along with it. Read the story while listening to the album! Legendary Kingdoms will have a review of it online shortly.

Another band I didn't see anybody mention is Syren's Call from France.

Some of my favorites are:

Vixen - go ahead and flame, but I loved those gals back in the day
Nightwish - with both Tarja and Annette
Within Temptation
After Forever - it's a shame this band is no more...:erk:
Doro - a classic/metal icon in my opinion
Echoes of Eternity
Leave's Eyes
Delain - my latest discovery

A newer female-fronted band I recently became aware of is Operatika. Closer to power metal than to symphonic, they've got some good guitar playing and songwriting along with good vocals! I did a review on their recent album, their first full length release: http://www.metalasylum.net/reviews/2009/mr0919.html
Nice review! Thanks for sharing!

I really like Operatika too! I haven't had the money to pick up their EP yet, but I've listened to what's on their myspace on several occasions and I really enjoy it. I was very disappointed when they had to cancel their spot opening for Edguy and Kamelot at Jaxx last year, but I can't complain too much because I think it was (at least partially) due to that cancellation that I discovered another great metal band with female vocals (who opened that show instead) - Blood Corps.

Blood Corps was an instant love for me. Right away Nina's vocals kicked me clear out of my seat! The band was so high energy. Their music had a groove and just begged for you to bang your head! They're somewhere at the crossroads of heavy, power, and melodic metal, and they incorporate hooks that make their songs instantly likable. :headbang:

(And lucky for all of you, they have just been announced as the band that will kick off FotV this summer.)

AS Lance said earlier AETHERIUS - damn that little spitfire Olivia is some singer, the most dynamic female voice I have heard, well second most. The other is out of Houston Texas, SILENCED WITHIN, with the gorgeous banshee SLOAN on vocals, this band is one to be watched. Sloan's voice is so beautifully melodic, and then she ups the ante and changes to a vocal style that will send chills up your spine and make you break out in goose bumps.

Another female fronted Heavy Metal band. They were from Dallas Texas and have made three demos. This demo is their first dating back 1988. I've also got this from the guitar101 forum awhile together with the FIRE demo posted earlier. Credits go to the original uploader. Sad thing is that Paula Blade died in a car accident 2008.

Tracks:
1. The Untamed Child
2. Lay Down the News
3. Walkin’ on the Edge

I've already mentioned Madder Mortem on the first page, but they've just released their new album "Eight Ways" which proves that they are one of the most original metal bands around and which might become my favourite album of 2009. You can view the promoclip of "Armour" (one of the new songs) on this page. For samples of some of the songs, click on "Audio Player" (it seems that the sample of "A Different Kind Of Hell" doesn't work).

And the defunct all-female thrash metal band Ice Age, which I have also mentioned before, have made all their songs available for free on their official website. The first five songs are the best (IMO).

My favourite female fronted bands are:

Transentience - Gothic/Symphonic
http://www.myspace.com/transentience

A New Dawn - Gothic/Power/Traditional Metal with TWO female lead singers plus a growler (who until recently was also female).

Temujin - Progressive/Gothic band from Melbourne

End of Aeon - Have three guitarists plus Bass - Rock/Metal with the occasional bit of electronica from Sydney

Temtris - Gothic metal band from Sydney

Tantalum - All female glam/metal from Melbourne

Ethereal Pandemonium - Black Metal from Slovakia

Here are some of my favorites:

EVAREST (http://www.myspace.com/evarestczech , Czech Republic)
According to their Metal Maniacs review, their debut album "FEAR" has "the uptempo pizzazz of Helloween...", they received a 9/10 from their Sonic Cathedral review and from other reviews they are recommended for fans of Gamma Ray & Sonata Arctica. I think their music is a cross between Power Quest & Nightwish. If headbanging fast & furious to a female fronted Power Metal band is your thing, then this band is for you :). I did see them live in Sweden for their CD release tour and not only did they enjoy themselves on the stage, they were very energetic and fun to watch. Their lead guitarist Pepa is a total Ham, raise your camera and chances are he's already posing for you :p! The vocalist, Eva knows how to keep the audience's attention with frequent eye contact and interacting with her bandmates. Clearly these guys are no strangers to live performance. In fact they just played at one of Europe's bigger Metal Fests called MASTERS OF ROCK in Vizovice between the sets of DragonForce & Edguy. Any chance we could see them on the next year's bill ;)?

KRLES' (http://www.myspace.com/krlesband , also Czech Republic)
These guys are awesome. They've been around since 1998 and have 4 albums to their credit. Lucie's vocals reminds me of Marta Gabriel of CRYSTAL VIPER. I cannot help but headbang to their songs. Definitely on of the most obsecure and yet kickass female fronted Power Metal bands in Europe. Lucie and Eva from EVAREST are good friends and frequently perform duets together which if you're a fan of both bands, is really fun to watch :) If only we could see them here in the States! Hint, Hint ;)

MINSTRELIX (http://www.myspace.com/minstrelixfc2webcom , Osaka, Japan)
I heard a track from these guys on the All Hallows Eve MetalFest II Compilation CD, held at Chillicothe, OH. One track and I was hooked, BIG TIME. This band defines itself as Folk Speed Metal! Their track "The Betrayal" starts off instrumental, kicks into Speed Metal, drops into JAZZ, and picks back up into Speed Metal. Having played them on my Metal radio show on www.xtrememetalradio.com during my show (DJ Metal Daddy, Sundays from 9:00 to Noon Eastern time), I have received a lot of favorable comments about them.

CRYSTAL VIPER (http://www.myspace.com/crystalviperofficial , Poland )
No introductions necessary here. One of the most kickass female fronted Power Metal bands in Europe. They just played at Manowar's Magic Circle Festival, followed by the Headbanger's Open Air. See them next year at Keep It True XIII! New album is on its way :D!

ELEVARE (http://www.myspace.com/elevare , BRAZIL)
Heard a track of theirs on the Warriors Of MetalFest II (www.myspace.com/womfest) Bonus CD and really liked the vocals, so I checked their myspace page and was blown away by the strength of Pamela Emmanuel's voice! WOW! They describe themselves as Progressive Goth Metal but I'd classify them as simply awesome. Apparently Clint Olsen of www.MetalCDRatings.com also agrees with me because when I sent him Elevare's debut album he was also really taken by Pamela's voice and gave the CD a 4/5 (not an easy task as he is very very picky). I subsequently forwarded the album to Sonic Cathedral and they gave it an 8/10. Definitely check them out, you'll be glad you did.

Hope you all have fun discovering these great new bands.

Bought this band's CD early this year and after reading your description decided to revisit it. The comparison to Helloween's power speed sound is a good one. Your description of their live performance makes me want to see them now even more.

I would love to see Crystal Viper in the states! Marta's voice just blows me away. Not to mention the band's story lines are just fun IMO. Anyone who is a fan of power metal with intense fantasy themes needs to check this group out!

The others I know I have at least heard of or perhaps have heard a song or two in passing, but I will have to go check into further.

Thanks for the great recommendations, Datis! Keep 'em coming!

Female Fronted bands Metal, Rock. whatever? Have pretty much ALWAYS been a passion of mine, probably going all the way to the first time I heard & saw Videos for Girlschool (RIP Kelly Johnson), Rock Goddess, and of course Joan Jett & The legendary Runaways!!! But several have already been mentioned already, Detente & Fear Of God in particular! Dawn Crosby was just simply BADASS!! (RIP Dawn, you're definitely STILL missed!) Hellion, Ann Bolelyn what an awesome voice! Lately, I'd definitely have to say that Hysterica are on the top of that list now as well!!! What an ABSOLUTELY incredible band! They remind me of another one of my faves, MANOWAR!!!
Crucified Barbara are really great too!!! I also just heard White Skull, I LOVED them too! Oh & how can ANYONE not LOVE a Metal Chick w/ a BADASS OVERKILL TAKING OVER patch on emblazoned on the back of her denim vest?!! :headbang:

I also forgot to mention, I LOVE Crystal Viper! Marta DOES KICK ASS!!!
Oh & Kate French in Vainglory is awesome too! And very sexy as well! rwowr! :)
Oh & one of my faves from back in the day was Leather Leone from Chastain!
She was ALWAYS one of my favorite female vocalist!!!
