Reverie/Harlequin Forest

Reverie/Harlequin Forest is one of my favorite songs on that album..along with Isolation years...and Atonement..(it is hard to pick a favorite). They're all beautiful, and R/HF has fantastic imagery. I listen these songs while heading to and fro work because we have some great scenery over here, and the music matches the landscape.

Um, Beneath the Mire is probably the second best song on GR and the intro is great... but I guess it's not metal enough for some of you...
Metal enough? Lol. Most people don't listen to Opeth just for the "metal" elements.

yes but then you'd be missing one of the most amazing solos ive heard.

You're reffering to that thing that Mike does at 3:19, right? *crosses fingers*

About the track in general... I love it, I just think the opening riff puts the entire track down a few notches. I mean I understand what they were trying to do, but the execution was just too cheesy. It sounded like a middle eastern hijack of Opeth.. not at all pleasant to me.

But I have to say that I respect their boldness to take the music somewhere that different. I just hope that next time it's done, it works slightly better, that's all.

Ah, listening to it now... I get goosebumps whenever it opens up into that second riff... so damn good.

awesomer than FNM??? are you kidding me?!?!?!?! there's no way the intro to beneath the mire is better than any faith no more!!!

yup thats the one. And the one around 6min. is also incredible. But yea the opening riff sounds like some weird Russian thing....i think that mike was just trying to do some weird timing dissonant thing to go with Per's part....like you said appreciate it but not my fav....and the second part is beautiful i love Mendez's bass part to it

Yeah, for sure, the way the bass was written in that part is awesome. It's just very solid and linear, keeping that rumbling beat going, but in the last bar just breaks off and adds to the melody.

I'm not very fond of that solo around 6 minutes. It's the second let down of the track for me. I'm totally in love with Mike's second solo at 4:15 though.

I didn't really dig it at first but I do really like it

It could be a bit shorter but the middle: "We are the trees" - one of the best moments on the album IMO

*They are the trees.

I agree, that part is great.

Haha! I knew that "Beneath the mire" would get flamed for that opening riff. The working title for the riff was "The Russian" and never was intended to sound like fucking "Kashmir" which I still don't think it does. The syncopated drums and bass thump (snare, bassdrum etc) is quite silly but I think it beams confidence. I've been meaning to do a part like that since 1997...."When" has it but it's much faster and less to the point. The keyboard sound has got a lot of shit for sounding 80´s which it isn't...it's a Chamberlain mellotron string sound, it's definately not meant to sound like some updated string samples. Well, I can't say what you guys should like and don't like but now you might see the riff in a different light?

Cheers
Mike

I've always loved it. Good work, Mike.

Haha... why was the working title "The Russian"? Do you have such strange titles for every riff? Oh, and you should come to Lithuania sometime! Maybe if you have a euro tour this summer.(that's when I'll be there) There's been a surprising amount of great bands coming through there lately: Judas Priest, Steve Vai, Vital Remains, etc...

Oh, and I've always liked Beneath The Mire quite a bit. (seriously though, I'm not just saying that after what you wrote)
