When most people speak of something musical being "rewarding" they are simply saying that they enjoy it or find that it has depth. But when listening to something the other day the only thing I could think about why I enjoyed it was that it was "rewarding".

Am I the only one that has albums or songs that only have certain moments that are very enjoyable but are largely made so by that which surrounds it? And no, I'm not just speaking of something made better in context. I'm talking about a moment in a song or a song in an album surrounded by music that is hard to listen to (for being simply bad, actually hurting your ears, sub par, frightening, etc) and quite literally feels like a reward.

My two cents, to keep this thread from sinking: "Difficult but rewarding" is definitely a cliche in reviewing experimental albums, I often find it patronizing but there's certainly truth to it, in order to begin to appreciate music which can be unfriendly to the listener, you usually have to find something that doesn't violate your threshold of accessibility. I can see your point about the relief of finding a coherent song buried amidst noise.
