i liked them both, they were both well done. Hats off to the producers of the 2003 version for not spoiling a classic 
i remember getting Ring after seeing a trailer for it on the Battle Royale DVD, which is a fucking awesome film. anyway i watched it, didnt think it was that great but it had its moment, anywho i remember thinking ''i hope they dont make this into an American teen type film out of this. and then they did, what was the point, oh well that Audition film looks good too, well it looks crap, but its meant to be good.
