I recorded this band a week ago. There are no vocals or toms yet. I also just quick mastered it that way it wasn't super quiet. Any criticism is appreciated.

I know the song might not be the most original but I really need some help on improving this mix. The drums are all natural except the kick. It was a DW kit with a really nice snare that I can't recall the name of.

Overheads - SM81s
Rack Tom - D2
Floor Tom - D4
Snare Top - 57
Snare Bottom - SM7
Kick - D6

Guitars: SM7 on the outer edge of the speaker, 57 on the cone
Bass: DI through a Sansamp Bass Pre-amp

I also have snare samples if anyone wants them.

Guitars have a bit too much gain in my opinion. The drums and cymbals sound pretty fantastic though.

I would love to have some samples of that snare!

What's the kick sample?

The kick sample is a 20% blend of the Chimaira kick with the original track. I will upload the snare as soon as I get back from work tonight.

I think it sounds fantastic! I agree about the guitars being a little gainy, but they're working in the mix and I LOVE that Mesa tone. I think the guitars could be brought up just a wee-bit in the mix.

I kinda liked the music as well... is that bad? lol

It was some kind of DW Snare. If it is really important to you guys I can find out exactly what type of snare. I will be updating the mix tomorrow hopefully with vocals. And Rex I agree with you that the guitars could come up. Thanks guys for the feedback!!!

Upon second listen, the guitars aren't as gainy as I thought. They could probably still use a little less, but it's not life threatening to the mix. The low end is great. Definitely turn them up though.

Can't wait to hear this with vocals!

drums sound kick ass, but those guitar takes need to be redone. not because of a bad recording, but sloppy and out of tune playing and being seriously out of tune.

Ok I updated the mix with vocals and spent about 5 hours on it today. I spent a hell of a lot longer on mastering it this time also. Right now I think the snare could come up and be more "poppy".

Sounds pretty good man, I'm digging it. Vocals could use some harmonies here and there and maybe some delays and shit to spice things up a bit though.
