already got it. and Wintersun is kinda power metal.
I can understand why you say Wintersun is kinda power metal, but let's admit that it has a lot more balls than most others power metal bands. In my case, I call Wintersun folk/viking/power/death metal. Can't get more specific than that

What constitutes "power metal"? Is it that it's simply straight forward metal without the bells and whistles? Meanwhile, groups like Evergrey are bunched in and they are more goth-prog than power.

I just think the "power" designation is a bit dubious.

Power Metal= musically, high-pitched vocals and psuedo-neo classical musical modes with an emphasis on fantasy/imaginary lyrical base. Helloween might have been the first purely power metal band, deriving their styles from a mix of Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen. Probably the most blatantly power metal bands are Blind Guardian (good and managing actual originality), Gamma Ray (offshoot of Helloween, some of the stuff is decent) Rhapsody (the cheesiest), Primal Fear (winners of the "completely rip off Judas Priest's sound award"), and so forth.

I wouldn't say power or death, more of neoclassical, viking/folk, melodic.
(And don't say neoclassical is the same as power metal because its not true...ex. Hell's fire club by Edguy is straight power metal and doens't have a note of neoclassism in it.)

power metal is for people who would rather listen to music that isn't featuring the vocals more then the instruments. thats my perception on it though.

:wtf: ...the vocals are a focal point with power metal... I mean the vocal patterns aren't almost always over simplistic chord patterns??

I think the main focus of power metal is Melody... the guitars, the keyboard and the vocals are throwing together a great deal of melody and the drums and bass are (most of the time) putting together a very ball-less rhythm pattern with not much focus.

That's EXACTLY what I don't like about power metal... too much melody everywhere turns to cacophony! And I like my music punchier...
