I was checking my bank account balance online today, and saw that there was a pending $50 charge from True.com, that retarded dating website that always assaults people with banner ads. Needless to say this has got me pretty freaked; I thought my computer was secure, and either way it's certainly been less secure in the past than it is now, and nothing happened then. It's still pending, so apparently my bank can't do anything about it yet, but FUUUCCCKKK...still trying to figure out how this could've happened...

Sorry to hear that. That happened with one of my credit cards several years ago. There are lots of ways those things can get "in the open" without you doing anything wrong. Make sure you demand a new card from your bank though.

The guy that sits next to me at work had some one use a clone of his credit card to buy a plane ticket in India a couple weeks ago. Needless to say he hadn't ever been to India.

FWIW, I hope you guys shred your bills before you toss them out.

Absolutely!

One time when I was overseas someone tried using my credit card in England. But as I was in Romania at the time, and the credit card company new it since I also used that card to by my plane tickets, they knew it wasn't me in England and put the card account on hold until I returned.

Be careful with debit cards, as banks are not subject to the same fraud protection laws as credit card companies. When doing online purchasing, use a credit card instead if possible.

Or just setup a different account number for the debit card and only transfer money to it from your main account when you are buying something right at the moment. Even if the crooks somehow manage to get your debit card, your account number AND the account login number chart, they still cannot do anything with it :heh:

Thanks for the support dudes, it's encouraging to know that it might not necessarily be some little keylogger worm thing on my computer recording everything I say and do, cuz I've usually been good about erecting (tee hee) defenses around my compy. Donkeys, that's pretty funny dude, especially because the purchase was made in India (rather than a ticket to India from the US) - talk about not very sharp crooks  And Mark, that's good that the CC company knew something was amiss; that must've been one of those "holy shit" moments when you got back, thinking about what would've happened if they hadn't realized what was going on!

And Sloan...I'll keep you informed :heh:

my bank account got fucked with just last week. $175 from some pet training place, and i have no pets. i also had some diet pills charged on my account for $70, and they were actually delivered TO MY HOUSE! i'm 5'10 and 175lbs, so loosing weight was the least of my concerns when those came in...

but my bank has helped me out with this stuff. got a new account and i don't have to pay any fees or anything, just file a claims report. not too shitty, but still sucks having to deal with it. so i know how you feel.

Damn dude, that's ridiculous - any idea how the ne'er-do-wells got your info? Is your compy less than 100% protected, perchance, or do you think it was totally beyond your control? (short of not buying anything online, of course)

woah.. if it was used for dating website then you know the dude isn't going to be some well 'ard nut job.

and you should get intouch with the website about it, they might ban the dudes account and give you your money back?

This is why you KILL BANK ACCOUNT.

sometimes it kinda sucks, but i know i don't have to pay overdraft charges anymore.
they say i owe them $300+, but fuck those assholes, i didn't agree for them to pay for something i didn't have the money for. i wouldn't even give them $300 if they sucked my dong for 5 days straight.

Not all banks have the fucked up (albeit amazingly secure) login system that Finnish banks have!

My bank in the UK (which i still use on the basis that i refuse to deal with anyone except someone in the UK with my money) just needs login/password and a secure answer to a question
