Im unfamiliar with this genre. Tell me some of the known bands, pioneers and such. You know, so that i get the idea.

Thanks in advance.

yeah, Acid Bath works. Good recommendation there. Awesome band.

5ive is another one. Instrumental sludge. Pelican can be considered instrumental sludge/doom

Acid Bath is good.

if you like them check out Agents Of Oblivion and Deadboy And The Elephantmen. they're both really different from AB but worth checking out (they Dax's, the singer, bands after AB broke up).

i got into AB first and then found out about his other bands and like them just as much (if not more).

i'm drawing a blank on any other sludge bands right now though (except for stuff that's been mentioned already).

Some of these are already mentioned but worth repeating.

Eyehategod
Iron Monkey
Cavity
Grief
Floor (especially the early stuff)
Leechmilk
Rwake
Bongzilla
Crowbar
Mugwart
Fistula
Branoil
Beaten Back To Pure
Sofa King Killer
Noothgrush
Rue
Acid King
-16-
Bottom
Acid Bath

Sourvein
Burning Witch
Weedeater
Buried At Sea
Buzzov*en
Toadliquor
Moho
Fleshpress
Unearthy Trance
Tusks Of Blood

Oh and don't forget the early Melvins. They were a big influence for the bands like Eyehategod.

Isis, Pelican and 5ive all worth checking out too. They usually appeal to just about anyone into stoner/doom/sludge
