Basically everything but track 5, "The Best of Times" leaked.

the shattered fortress, the continuation to portnoy's "AA" series...holy crap, such an incredible song. I thought A Rite of Passage/A Nightmare To Remember both SUCKED, but this song is phenomenal.

The Count of Tuscany is amazing as well, so far(Still listening as I make this)

The other song, Wither, sounds very radio-rocky and generic, but it isn't...bad, per se, just not anything memorable


I can't believe it but 3/5 songs on the new album so far I've enjoyed, I didn't think DT would ever release music I enjoyed again

I'm gonna wait for the album to be released, myself. It kinda ruins the whole anticipation when you can't voice your opinion as soon as you've heard the album. And I'm still a firm believer of supporting bands you like by buying their albums instead of downloading their stuff. Can always rip the mp3's from cd later yourself if you want them on your mp3 player.
 
I, too, will wait for the album to be released. I haven't downloaded music since I was in high school--I was on dial-up and getting 1-2 MP3s a day if I was lucky.

It's true that illegally downloading music broadens the artists' audience to those that don't want to spend money on something they haven't heard. But now there are free, legal sites like Myspace, which hosts a number of songs for pretty much every band, so one can get a good taste of what they sound like. Then, if you like it, buy the CD so the band can afford to make more music.

You wouldn't do your job for free, would you?

Sorry, can't help you there. Even if no one bought this album everyone in DT probably has enough money to be set for life. I'm genuinely poor, I have no sympathy for rich people bawwing about not getting more money

If it was a lesser known band then sure, but a band like DT will get oodles of cash for this regardless, their "VIP package" for prognation is over 300 bucks for crying out loud
 
That comment taken from Portnoy's forum is only regarding the discussion of the material before it is officially released. There have been many problems in the past there where someone has gotten a hold of the album prior to the release date and posted something on the message board about it. Portnoy and the mods decided slap some rules into place in order to keep the peace among forum members, among other things. Portnoy knows full well that he cannot stop people from downloading but he can request that the folks who did refrain from discussing things ahead of time.

Some people want to wait and be surprised when they hear it for the first time.

And this is exactly the attitude that makes niche music like prog having a very hard time to survive. If you are interested in the album, buy it. Get official sources to listen to samples. Don't download to album illegally. If you did, then at least, you have to buy it afterwards if you liked it.

Would you also tell on this forum that you illegally downloaded a Suspyre album?

Oh well, this whole downloading discussion is worth a thread of it's own. And it would be interesting to get to know the band's opinion on that topic, too.

I, too, don't believe in giving more money to the rich. But the thing is, a lot of these bands are nowhere near rich, including Dream Theater, who are pretty high on the commercial ladder as far as prog-metal goes. They make a living from it, but they're not Metallica.

Most of the money in your concert ticket goes to the promoters; it's very expensive to rent the venue and to hire people to set up and run the soundboard, lights, move equipment, advertise, etc. Also, when the band is on tour they need to pay for their hotels, gas (RVs get about 8MPG:puke:), drivers, and meals (I guess some tour buses have kitchens, now, though).

That's why every little bit helps.

Actually yes, I did download a Suspyre album. But I also own all 3. I do purchase albums i'm interested in, but considering i barely have money to get by doing anything, if i don't download music I won't ever hear anything new. In fact, if it wasn't for piracy I wouldn't have ever even heard of Suspyre because piracy helped me discover prog/metal in the first place. In fact, I honestly believe that for the most part, both genres would be close to dead in the US if not for piracy. The internet allows people to find new things, and while some do just download, true fans will support the artist.

I'm not too overly fond of dream theater anymore, and they have tons of rabid fans who will more than make up the 15 bucks I didn't give them
 
When I read posts like yours, I want SOOO badly to believe they are entirely in jest. Your illogic is based mostly on poor assumptions, but even assuming DT were filfthy rich and didn't *need* people to buy their CDs, how does that make stealing right? They (and a slew of other people who work with/for the band) are still putting the work in to making the product; it's not like they are robbing anyone or acheiving the money by immoral means that would justify YOUR immoral means. 99% of the time, the "steal from the rich" bullshit is just used as a cheap attempt at redirecting blame and removing guilt. This is one of those times.

Gregg raised an excellent point. With things like Myspace, Youtube (most bands post their music videos, audio samples, live footage, etc. DT openly supports people circulating live video/audio that hasn't been officially released), sample clips on websites like Amazon, etc. it's incredibly easy to sample a CD without stealing or doing anything illegal. Nevermind the fact that the aforementioned methods are MUCH better ways of discovering new music than pirate sites.

I have a feeling you would be surprised to see how little money there is in the music industry for the actual musicians. Unless you're Rihanna, you have a day job that pays the bills. As far as I've seen, this is true for all genres. Musicians make very little, if anything, until they reach the top of the commercial echelon of their niche. And, seeing how genres such as Jazz and Prog Metal *ehem* are fairly unpopular styles when it comes to commercialism, we're lucky if we break even on a project - be it a tour, album, or promotion of any other kind.

Please, do as you like with your money. I'm definitely not trying to tell you what to do. I'm just trying to put this in perspective. The rock star lifestyle you saw in the '70s and '80s doesn't really exist anymore.

I have actually read a statement from Portnoy regarding the amount of money DT spent on Progressive Nation. Basically they have to put up a LOT of the bands own money to get things rolling, get the bands they wanted, etc. Dream Theater will not make bank on the tour. Yes, they are probably the most well known band of the genre and the most successful, but they are not Metallica in terms of revenue.

I understand the problems with not having a lot of money to spend on your favorite bands, believe me. I struggle just as much as most do but there are things that one can do. If you have a broadband connection tune into a good online station to hear all the kickass music you can. Personally, I found out about Suspyre via Beyondearcandy.com. Killer station. There is also Pandora and Live365. Then buy what you can.

And as for on-topic: Myspace and Pandora are such good ways to find out about bands nowadays. Even though the artists don't earn anything by it they make their music available to the listeners on myspace and various other sites. I, personally, think thats the best way to find out about new bands. That's how I found out about Suspyre as well. They got confirmed for Progpower Europe, I went to check their myspace and I had their myspace playing for days on end till I managed to get my hands on an album. I bought my copy of When Time Fades off the band themselves at Progpower EU.

Even though I don't have too much to spare, moneywise, myself (buying tickets OKC - Amsterdam twice a year doesn't leave for much, me being a student) I still think it's worth it to spend the little that I can spare on albums and tickets to shows, because music is just a big part of my life and I prolly couldn't do without it. Therefore I think I should support the music, bands and artists that I like, in the hope that they'll keep making music that I enjoy :D

Very true. But actually, we do receive royalties from some sites that stream audio. Namely Rhapsody, Napster, and Last.fm.
