I'm late to this thread. I own a townhouse in London (2 bed, 2 bath, a teeny weeny garden, and a private parking space which is cool) and a 5 bedroom house in New York (about 40 mins outside Manhattan) whilst living the American dream. I even have a white picket fence.
The rates have been phenomenal - I got my mortgage refinanced and I'm on 4.625% fixed. It's the lowest our laywer has ever seen. Thing is, the taxes came back to haunt me because we were low on the escrow. But this only lasted 12 months, so we're back into a respectable mortgage payment (about $2K per month).
Winters kill us. The gas bills are easily $400 per month, and our insulation sucks. It's a 1920's colonial, so it looks nice, but it heats up for shit. I wanna sell, but it just seems like there's no where to move where I can alleviate the mortgage. Everywhere I want to live seems to be just as expensive as New York state. I don't get that. I mean, if I'm going to spend $500K on a house then why the fuck would I live in the middle of nowhere.
The idea of "location location location" has gone out the window.
I'llbuy this house (mom&dad's) when theymoveto our summerplace permanently and one of my brothers' rooms will becomea studio and it shall rule and I'll have a dog and he'll be my best friend and bark at the moon
I want to buy the house my family used to live in, but sold 2.5 years ago. I have so many memories of the place, and it was nice after all the work my dad had put into it over the years. Either that, or a nice isolated cottage up north, maybe the one we used to co-own with my father's brother (who owns it himself now).
The only good thing about the winter here is that my electricity bill goes down to about $60-$75 a month. ANd 90% of the time it ain't col enough to put on the gas fireplace, so that bill is usually about $20.
But in the summer when we gotta crank up the AC, electric bills can skyrocket to $300+
Water is so damn cheap down here. I accidentally left an outside hose on one day while we were at work. When we got home, the grass on the side of our house was drenched. My water bill for those two months (water bill comes every other month) was $35, haha.
I mean, congrats and stuff, but I just got back from a 4 hour jaunt with my broker. He's also my guitarist, songwriter, and drinking buddy.
$250k gets me in a small house in the fucking GHETTO.
$325k gets a small house in a decent neighborhood.
No way in fuck am I going over $350k, because my life is pretty much over if I go even well under that. I'll have enough money for beer but as far as CDs, music equipment, going out regularly, and shit for my car, that'll all be over with. I do get hefty year end bonuses at work though, I'll be able to to buy some shit then.
But it'll be okay because I'll have a garage, a dog, and maybe a pool to lure hot naked wimmenz.
