I just found this band recently, and I like it. Only thing is, I'm not sure about other bands of this genre, apart from maybe MDB. Help me out here at all?

Also, looking through iTunes to get an album downloaded quickly, as I'm lazy, and they have 'Of Sculpted Ivy And Stone Flowers'. Is this worth it or is there a better album in your oppinions that would be better to start off with?

If you don't have any of our albums, my suggestion would be to get "The Pale Haunt Departure" first, it's our most recent and it's a good representation of everything we're about. From there, I'd work my way backwards through the catalog.....

"Of Sculptured Ivy..." I think is a great album (and I can say this openly with no fear of being big headed because I didnt play on it haha) and it's probably my second favorite ND cd. But it's very slow overall, very doomy and it's not really an accurate representation of where we're at now. It's definitely more for those with heavier "doom" leanings overall.

Other bands that might be somewhat comparable to us stylistically would be stuff like Opeth, Novembre, Woods Of Ypres, Daylight Dies, Edge of Sanity.....problem is, anyone who knows these bands will tell you that they all (including us) have alot of differences that set us apart from one another. We all kind of fall into that grey area that goes beyond simple categorization (even "Death/doom" is much too general of a tag to put upon us or the aforementioned bands). So unfortunately, you're just going to have to seek things out and sample them as you go to see what strikes your fancy. Ultimately, what tag or genre we are doesn't matter, you either like the music or you don't I always tell people. Good luck on your music searching!

True dat! Steven Wilson said something very much like that when Porcupine Tree toured with Opeth a couple of years ago, which was an odd pairing: "There's only two kinds of music out there - music you like and music you don't."

I tell myself this when I mix November's Doom in with Tangerine Dream, Blue Oyster Cult, Rhapsody, and Genesis in the CD changer and set them to random play :)

I want to echo on Ken's post above.
Like Ken, I too have a WIDE range of musical tastes.
I am primarily into power metal, but also love bands like Novembers Doom, Katatonia, Candlemass, My Dying Bride, etc.

Unfortunately, Novembers Doom immediately get lumped into the "doom" category, based solely on their name. I will be the first to admit that I didn't check this band out until I got into bands like Opeth, etc. Being from Chicago, I had obviously been familiar with the name of the band for years. Though being primarily into bands like HammerFall and Iced Earth, I wrote the band off as something I would not enjoy.

I had read many killer reviews about Pale Haunt and was shocked to find it at Best Buy of all places when it came out (I guess the END has good distro it seems). I checked it out and was blown away!

One can detect so many influences in the music. Everything from death, doom, traditional, prog, etc.

I guess my point is that while everyone does it, classifying a band by one specific genre could result in passing up something great. I am really glad that I have become a lot more open minded about music in general (not just metal) as I have grown older. It has opened my ears up to some great music.

Right now in my car I have a mix of cds, like The Beatles, Gorefest, Crash Test Dummies, David Bowie, In Flames, Alice Cooper, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Opeth, Katatonia, Adam Ant, and Roy Orbison. And those are just the mix of discs I've been playing the last couple of days :-D

I've never been a fan of lumping bands into categories much, nor do I like when people categorize me....looking at my musical tastes you can start to see why that is. My attitude is, if you like heavy music, or heavy metal music, then please check us out. There's many (legal!) avenues to check out and sample our music for little or no cost online, to see if you like it. I just shudder at the idea of people thinking "Oh I dont like doom so I'm not interested in checking out ND" or even "Oh I dont like Opeth or MDB and this review says that ND is just like them." Oh well, what can ya do?

Larry - I couldn't agree with you more. Luckily, nowadays the internet has provided a great vehicle for people to check out bands via MP3's on band's or label's sites.

You want to talk about mix of music in the car? You don't even want to see the variety on my MP3 player. This morning, on shuffle, my MP3 player spit out "Forever" by KISS!! (Yes, that is the power ballad co-written by Michael Bolton!!) Great song!!!!

Meh, genre doesn't really worry me much (Because metal just confuses me with the rediculous sub-genres...). I like pretty much any genre of metal...any music really.

As for iTunes, I'm in the UK, so maybe the store is different...

Jasonic- I'm quite familiar with that sappy ass tune haha I'm a diehard KISS fan, though their late 80s/early 90s repertoire isn't necessarily a real favorite of mine

Yeah, I am a diehard fan too. I got suckered into their number of "Farewell" tours. They were the first rock band I was into. Period!

KISS falls into the "hard to define" category too though if you think about it.

Some defend their status as a "heavy metal" band. Others claim glam, hard rock, hair metal, cock rock, etc. Then some claim them to be 100% novelty.

A good tune is a good tune......

Last year, I really got into HIM. Based on their image and fanbase, they were never a band I ever thought of checking out. I saw the video for "Wings of a Butterfly" and was like, "Wow!! This is some of the catchiest stuff I have heard in a long time". Their album did not dissapoint.

KISS is a rock and roll band, period. They have elements of all of those styles you mentioned. Again, I don't see why people care so much about what fucking category to put them in, I think people get more caught up in that than paying any real attention to absorbing the music.

I last saw KISS with Tommy and Eric in the band. Contrary to what alot of other people say, I thought it was one of the best shows I've seen. The "farewell" tour with Ace and Peter in 2000 was dreadful, those guys were lethargic at best.

I've been a HIM fan since 1999, actually. Heard a couple of songs from the first cd and loved it. For the longest time it seemed noone around here knew a thing about them. Now they're everywhere, heh. I'm happy for the band getting success, but getting a bit burned out on them. I still enjoy listening to the old cds though. The most recent one hasn't quite grown on me overall. They're coming in May, but I really wish they wouldn't tour with such inappropriate acts. Then again I guess they're trying to appeal to that 15 year old crowd now, heh.

I debated seeing KISS with Poison last summer. I guess you could say I am a closet Poison fan. Hehehe. Anyhow, I think that was with Tommy Thayer. I have no problem with them replacing Ace and Peter, but at least give them their own make-up image (Ala Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr when they first joined).

This is one of those debates that goes round and round.....honestly, it doesn't matter to me that they're wearing their makeup. It's much too late in the game to be introducing new characters. If KISS weren't around anymore, I'd be paying to go see the numerous tribute acts and enjoying them. KISS now is sort of a combination of both worlds, the "real deal" and the "tribute act". I don't view them in the same way as I once did, as a credible force on the scene, creating new albums and all that. It has definitely become a "nostalgia act", but it's enjoyable in it's own right. Once upon a time, I would've been offended to see anyone but Peter or Ace up there in those costumes and makeup, but after seeing those two guys basically shit all over their legacy by caring more about getting wasted and performing half-assedly for our hard earned money, my feelings have changed. Basically, Tommy and Eric do a better "Ace" and "Peter", than Ace and Peter do now!

Anyhow yeah this is waaaaay off topic I'm sorry but fuck it.

Actually, Him have been doing a tour in England with the support act by Anathema. Now thats definatley good support act.

I just hope that Anathema will get a record deal. I really like their new song.:)

I wholeheartedly recommend Novembers Doom, Especially their latest album, Personally I still think ND as a Death/doom band but they do sound somewhat different from the rest.

Yeah I sampled a new Anathema song that was on Blabbermouth last week. It was pretty cool. Not nearly enough to gauge what the whole cd will be like but it's good in it's own right.

Yeah overseas I've seen that HIM have toured with the likes of Anathema and Porcupine Tree, heh. Here they tour with whatever new flavor of the month teen emo band is available. It's all label politics I'm quite sure. Typical American major label bullshit.

Yeah, I noticed HIM are coming back to the Congress, with AIDEN opening. I saw a video of AIDEN once. Seems to be in the same league as AFI, My Chemical Romance, Alkaline Trio, etc. Better fit than other bands I have seen them tour with.

I thought HIM would have been a definite for OZZFEST this year with their gain in popularity.

I'm sure I'm not in the right thread again with this, but I honestly haven't got a clue were to post what on this forum,@the new pittbull Mod.I'm sorry for that..:)

Anyway,I've been listening to "Amid Its Hallowed Mirth" and I dunno, the music is so..ppfff...to be honest,it nearly puts me to sleep.
Now I know I don't have to like all the albums of ND..but this one is just so very, very different from the others,so what can you guys tell me about AIHM..
