I like to go back to the stuff that really resonated with me when I was getting into metal.
Refreshing myself on the stuff that made me pick up a guitar in the first place usually gets me re-fired.

For me listen to other kind of music doesnt work very well. Let me explain, if I want to write some heavy stuff like Scar Symmetry and if I am gonna hear something different like guano apes, I will have riffs in my mind for the style that I am hearing in moment.

The past 2 days I wrote at least 10 different riffs that I found later to be generic, not solid enough, too mellow, that kind of shit. The best way to overcome this situation for me it´s to hear new music but in style that I want to write and learn a few songs from those bands that I like. Playing great riffs it will give ideas for my stuff. This is how I work with lack of creativity. One thing that I found it´s that I have to play guitar at least more than one hour before things flowing the way I want.

Not want to promote my shit but as an example, this intro riffs took me at least more than 3 hours just to take form.

and I just used that riff in the intro!lol Sometimes you will have to force yourself to overcome that lack of will for achieve something better.
