Black metal: Hehe, a tie between Emperor, Immortal, Diabolical Masquerade and Weakling.
Melodeath metal: Soilwork.
Viking metal: Bathory and (though they're not really 'Viking') Moonsorrow.
Folk metal: Probably Finntroll. Asmegin and old Vintersorg are close.
Progressive metal: Symphony X and newer Vintersorg.
Heavy metal: Iron Maiden.
Doom metal: Not really doom, but Katatonia.

Interesting that this thread is in the forum of a genre defying band like Nevermore. Also, where do I put Orphaned Land? Are we allowed to extend the subgenrefication (<-- this is probably not, in fact, a real word) ad infinitum ?
