So yeah, uh, soccer's pretty interesting actually

Oh, and random soccer thought--
My favorite name for a club team: Hearts of Oak (Nigeria)

In some respects. Then again, Portugal always fucking choke, and Italy are much more reliable. Of course, they weren't last time around, which in some ways is worse. They'll be looking to make sure they don't get humiliated twice. I'll tell you, I'm at least as worried about the Czech Republic game--those fuckers are good. Still, although it's a murderous group, the US still has a chance. I agree, there aren't any sure things in international soccer anymore.

And yes, I'll be rooting along with you for Germany's exit. Not an Italy fan either. I like Argentina though. England is the team I pull for most, unless their success effects the US team.

Isn't the Czech Republic a considerably stronger team than Italy nowadays? Perhaps I read something wrong.

I thought I read that the Czech Rep. was ranked #2 in the world or something.

The world rankings don't really mean much, but yeah, they're definitely at least as dangerous as Italy. Bad, bad luck in the draw.

How does the advancement to the next round work?

Overall record in the qualifying, with goal differential as the tiebreaker?

And then during the finals, the top 2 teams from each group advance to the next stage, and it's knockout after that.

They need to at least get four points from a win (3) and a tie (1).
I wish the Italy game was first. It doesn't count for much, but Italy sometimes start tournaments kinda slow and then heat up.

I can't wait for it to start. All of the games will be televised live, which means they'll be on during the workday. My tivo will get a workout. I'll probably take a few vacation days too. I'll definitely catch all of the US games live. Two of the three first round games are on during the week, and the Italy game is on a Saturday.
When the WC was in Japan/Korea last time all the games were on in the middle of the night. I fucking got up in the middle of the night several times to watch games. Brutal schedule.

ha ha, I did the same thing when NHL players were first allowed to participate in the Olympics, when it was in Japan.

Got home from work, forced myself asleep at like 7 PM until about midnight, went out to the bar (they stayed open for us diehards) and watched hockey from 1 AM-4 AM. Ugh that was rough.

I remember reading that last time around some town in Scotland (I think) circulated a petition to temporarily change their timezone to the one used by Japan so that people would be off work for the games. That was REALLY successful. Haha, can't hurt to try.

When I was 5 years old my father would do the same, waking in the middle of the night to watch the rugby games which were held in Australia or New-Zealand and shouting like a donkey, so I got the habit pretty early...

Too bad more of us don't live closer to each other. I'd be fun to drink pints of tasty brewskis and watch the matches together.

Luckily JayK lives right up the road. :)

Yeah, well get ready for 9am drinking boy! Some games will start at 3pm in Germany....

I think I'm going to have to book personal days for each England game. I honestly don't know how to go about the world cup this year because I don't want to miss too many games, and neither do I want to watch evening re-runs in the hope that nobody gives the score away.

I guess I won't miss too many games either. World Cup has it that even matches I normally wouldn't give a shit about (i.e. South Korea - Poland or something...) become all of a sudden cool to watch.

Some of the oddball games are the greatest to watch. Actually, teams like Brazil can be boring as hell. (They've never quite reached the peak they were at in 1982, probably the best world cup in my lifetime).

Yeah, they won the last world cup but they had the most boring matches (and some of the easiest opponents). I'd love to see Brazil get a real challenge. OK so they beat England but we had that goal disallowed....ugh, I'll stop right here.

All I can say is, I'm sure Brazil are jumping for joy that they don't have to face China or Costa Rica this time round. OOhhhh scary.

I'm going to bump that thread with the groups.
