SoE I love to death. PoT is awesome.
StD is shit, overall. I just listened to it again while replying to another thread and thought I'd post my thoughts again here just to stimulate discussion.
Say what you like about Vol. 8 or any other Bush album, at least the guitars sounded FAT, unlike StD where they sound fucking shit. A thrash metal album with guitars that sound as thin and low in the mix as this? It's not a good album at all, mainly due to the stupid production and mixing but fuck, there's some crap songs on here.

Lone Justice (stupid backing vocals, stupid bass mixed too high, guitars WAAAY too low)

SSC/Stand or Fall (rythm guitars too low in mix, again)

The Enemy (what the fuck is that intro drum sound and silly guitar thing all about? Boring song, and what the FUCK are the backing vocals at the chorus? WHo the fuck was singing in that low register? Even Scott doesnt sing that low - I actually started a thread about those stupid backing vocals in this song, I dont think anyone ever answered it with any authority. Who did those "In The Night" chants? NO CUNT, that whole song sounds like the tape was going at different speeds throughout it, it's a SHIT song!)

Medusa - (sounds like an Overkill reject. There's those stupidly low pitched backing vocals on the pre-chorus again!) It's a decent song, but nothing special. Like Overkill.

Gung-Ho - Alright, but rythm guitar tone is too thin. Apply that to AIR and Madhouse and we're done.

Again - what the FUCK are the stupid backing vocals all about? They clearly slowed the tapes down to make the voices sound lower than they really were. It sounds fucking stupid and it's all the way through the album.
Someone, anyone, tell me why they wanted the backing vocals to sound so stupid.

was 1 of my favourite anthrax records, prob hasnt held the test of time but they were all young kids still, air alone makes the album memorable,i love the enemy and the intros;)

THIS

is ten times better than 70% of the shite on Spreading the Disease. It's also heavier - don't give me the shit about not being "thrash" - that song is way heavier than fucking "Medusa".
It's a GREAT tune.

I rank STD higher than SOE and POT.

Now I know youre on fucking drugs. No one actually thinks Stomp is better than STD.

Um, thats the beginning of the song.

I actually think the backing vocals are cool and add to the album.

That's fine. But you must be able to hear they aren't NATURAL. No one in Anthrax sings like that. I've tried to link to it a bit better, I'm talking about the "in the night" parts.

It's stupid. They are NOT natural vocals so....they changed them to sound "better". Is that a little bit of SELLING OUT? I honestly don't get it, it sounds stupid to me, totally false, obviously not genuine, WHY?!

Exactly. They aren't clean normal vocals and thats what makes them great. Nothing else they ever did sounds like that and that makes it unique to the album.

Every band that ever added effects or tweaked some sound is automatically a sell out band and not metal?

Are you for real man?

The guitars in Limp Bizkit are also 'fat' sounding. Doesn't mean shit. Would you also say Limp Bizkit is better than SPD just because it's not a 'fat' sound?

You are also talking about a production that was 25 years old.

In fact it is so absurd to say Volume 8 is better than STD that it really isn't even worth the time to type any more. You and a few other die hard John Bush lovers will say anything he has ever done is amazing. So it really doesn't matter what anyone else says. If John Bush sang on STD you'd probably never be saying any of this nonsense

Got damn i just tried to get through this entire song and couldn't fucking terrible. And John Bush is fucking annoying to me. This is not metal, its bullshit rock. Fuck this shit, to even say this is better than anything on STD you are just plain fucked in the head..... sorry... I had this same exact reaction when I used this CD as a Frisbe...twice!

if you honestly think that an awful song like 'Killing Box' is better than 'The Enemy' or any song off STD then you should stop taking drugs. i love John's vocals on 'White Noise' but on 'Killing Box', 'P&V' and most other songs on Vol.8 they are nothing but annoying, Phil Anselmo's vocals on that tune are annoying too.

Speaking of... I always love watching this footage:

Joey gets beat up by moshers, classic!

Then this clip is just a materpiece. Danny Spitz goes off in a solo towards the end. Fuckin awesome.

Thrashard, are you giving Stormchaser drugs again? :loco:

Wow to me STD was Joey's best performance ever, yeah I'm a huge fan of Bush and what he did and always will be but STD to me is epic vocally, Medusa chorus, the Enemy, hell all the songs. Joey killed the whole album in an epic way. Yeah the guitars weren't fat, but it was the 80's all production sucked. Have you heard Kill 'Em All? Fistful is way better production-wise and has WAY better songs, sorry! And has a drummer that isn't muppet-level. I'm a big fan of low end in metal to me anger in music is conveyed through low angry tones, not high "tingy" guitars. Unfortuneately a lot of old great thrash just turns me off because of that so I know what you guys are saying, I just love the low end on guitars. Not there on STD, but the songwriting is.

I also think The Enemy and Medusa are probably two worst songs Anthrax has ever done, luckily they forgot the first one but unfortunately they sometimes play the latter, even crappier, song. That being said I'm not a very big fan of Killing Box either.
