When you growl, does it hurt if you haven't warmed up properly?

For me it's mostly that my tone isn't that sharp. Takes a couple of songs to get the real "punch". Food and drinks (both with or without alcohol) before usually makes it more heavy as well.

Nah, not if I haven't done a bunch of random screams the day before or stuff like that. I have a pretty weird voice with huge low and high capacities, and nothing in between.

The easiest way is really the head feeling thing they use with regular singing. You kinda feel a vibrato in the back of your mouth and in your head when you do stuff right, if you know what I mean. When you just do the good ol' OMG SOMEONE HAS A FINGER IN MY BUTT-screams it usually hurts your throat in the wrong way unless you're in a natural opera mode.

The weight should be in the stomach and the vibrations in the back of your mouth and head pretty much. That's how it is for me when it works well.
