my critters also have grown listening to metal. and rock. and pop. and punk. and classical. and jazz. and rap. and hip hop. and whatever else happens to find it's way into my eclectic cd collection. i never rule out any form of music until i listen to it. this is why i get so damn frustrated with the lines i hear the most from people about metal:

"that shit sucks dude."
have you even stopped and payed attention to metal? have you any clue at all what goes into metal?

"anybody clan play that shit."
bwahahahahahahah!!! ok, then do it!

"i can't understand a thing they're saying. you should listen to bob dylan."
wtf?!?! someone actualy said that to me once. like anyone can understand a thing that coagulated wad of knucklefuck is saying.

My dad use to put my cds in bags when younger because they were 'evil'. He's a really conservative hippie that has this idea it's still 1970(his dad is the sameway but with the 50's). He does not realize music and people are different now and that tyranny does not exist. I have had my shirt ripped off my back because of my music and opinions. I don't eat dinner with my parents because he's like jeckle in hyde. I think it has something to do with him being a recovering alcoholic.

Agh, I know! This one idiot (who listens to Bob Dylan, ironically) said "dude, anybody can scream like that", so I asked him to give it a shot. He just screamed. So I responded by saying "so...are you going to try it, or what?" Ignorance, that's what it is. I was listening to Blind Guardian while he was watching a Ben Harper DVD and he ripped my headphones off, saying "listen to some REAL music!". Then he got all offended when I asked him to define what REAL music is.

Have the kids no fucking balls at all?!
When I was a kid I wouldn´t take shit like that, not even from my parents

I wouldn't take shit like that from my parents, but I wouldn't outright disobey them. What I usually do is educate them on the subject I have interest in, and they usually understand why I am attracted to it, and realize that it isn't a big deal for me to be interested in something such as black metal.

Now I realize not everyone has parents who will listen to them, but ... that is where people stash shit, and hide it from their parents.

I have educated my parents on this subject (my dad was an old school metal fan, though, so I didn't have to convince him), and it has helped somewhat. They don't really mind me buying metal with my own money, they just don't want to "live knowing that we bought you crap music". <---complete bullshit, they had no problem buying me rap back in the day. :erk:

This is an interesting post, but I have a similar story with a different ending. My dad was one of the first British skin-heads. Accordingly, he has an amazing collection of first wave reggae and ska vinyll, and later some pretty amusing WP punk stuff. He has pop, ska, reggae, 60s shit, psychadelic, rock, and an enviable collection of NWOBHM vinyll. He has, from on the one hand Celine Dion (I know, Jesus), to the other Cathedral and Lord Weird Slough Feg albums. His current favourite album is the Down - Nola opus.

Which is great. I have a really, REALLY extensive knowledge of music, given that he went on the "music-quiz" circuit for a good few years. I ad to "test him" on music, and vicariously, I had to ask him questions to get his knowledge up.

I have virtually no non-metal music. I have a Specials Cd, the best of Squeeze and the best of the Stranglers. Somewhere, I have Never Mind the Bollocks on tape. I have a retrospective of Dexys Midnight Runners. So how come, I didn't find Eclecticism?

A: I found everything I need in metal. I like the "outsider"status. I like the way that (in Europe, maybe not so much the US), it attracts geeks and the more cereberally talented. It has a song for every mood. I have been this way for over *gasps* 21 years, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I just think that we have to take "XXXXXX sucks" as short hand for "I don't like XXXXXXXX". Why do we take it so personally? It's really not as if it's our band....

Sounds like an Elitist, only liking whats publicly considered classic music, but not deciding for himself, but yea Bob Dylan does kick major ass.

Actually one of my friends who's strictly into Alternative Rock holds Metal in high regards due to it's diffuculty to play (depending on the band of course) yet he hates personally listening to it (which is fine by me).

I wish more non-metal listeners had the ability to take on this specific outlook.

I don't. Why do we want this music to become more popular than it is currently? So that even more mediochre shit can be produced ?

No matter what if something is made that catches on will be remade in a shitty mediocore way. No matter what you listen too (look at all the Morbid Angel rip offs)

I'm not open minded to the extent i'm going to actually look into underground rap or pop. Unless maybe their was a specific band that has upfront guitar playing or something get me curious. You know how sometimes you just can't relate to something. I don't think all music is directed to everyone.

I have an idea of what music should sound like.

its cool if you dont like it but i think its pretty sad if you cant appreciate anything that doesnt have guitars in it
