Symphony X in the '06

I showed all my friends Symphony X and they can't get enough of it. .
I have had a different result. Nearly all of the people I showed symphony X to, except the musically inclined, did not like it. they thought that they are way to "technical". However the people in my band all love them. (as well as DT, as they fall in the same category of music).

SymX has been a "musicians band" right from the start. IMO, I really don't think they will ever "rise above mainstream", the industry has controlled that scene for a long, long time.

yeah, and I'm not sure I'd like it if everybody started liking them. Plus, if they were really that serious about "rising above the mainstream" I think that they would advertise more and tour more. Plus in this age of popular music (pop) I dont think that symphony X would be appreciated as much as they chould be.

Hold the phone, when was this said? As far as I know, Dream Theater are very happy with the band and their careers, why would they be calling it quits?

yeah, that would be plain dumb on their part. But it's not going to happen.

I introduced alot of people to symphony x (metal lovers anyway) and they either didn't like them because its not their style..but do think they plan some very technical and awsome stuff! Their are the people who love'em! Their are also the people who just plain say "I hate that Fantasy Junk metal"
Sad story indeed :(

I have a theory that musical taste is directly proportional to intelligence. SymX is pretty technical, so to like (and fully understand) them you have to be smarter than a lot of people. Its kinda like how children read childrens books and older and more intelligent people read more complicated books. So if someone doesnt like them, then its just because their brain cant fathom what is goin on. There is also denial which may get in the way. What I mean by that is that people get used to a certain style so they might just start to "presume" its good witout keeping an open mind, so when they get introduced to something new they would probably just try to ignore it. Both of these factors can't be helped, so trying to convert these people would be an uphill battle. One thing's certain though, and that is we need people not to like SymX as well. Think about it. What would happen if everyone liked them?? We would hear them every day on the radio, on the tv, drilled into our minds like the mindless pop that dominates at the moment. Aaaaaaaahh!!! Terrible thought. Ok, well anyway, maybe a little carried away there :p. Odoyle rules!!! lol

I wouldn't say it's directly related to Intellegence, so much as it is to Thinking Power. People can be really smart, but not have the power to actually think things through. And like me, people can be fucking idiots, yet manage to think things through so deeply, that you can make the simplest of tasks seem rediculously complex and alot more than they actually are.

This is precisely why i hate progsnobs. They are so "openminded" to listen to such "intelligent" music, while at the same time they are the most closedminded assholes in the world.

No offense to you bro, because you aren't the only one, but come on. I mean, i'm an elitist, and i can't even justify that line of thought to myself.:err:

I wouldn't say it's all about intelligence or not understanding it (although it might be in some cases). But it may have to do with maturity and having experienced enough of other things. Think about what the younger kids are listening to (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, The Strokes, etc). That stuff is SO prominent in their daily lives from MTV, commercialism, and other pop culture references, that they may not be aware of other hidden treasures waiting to be found. It's a matter of finding something else beyond what they know, and realizing if it moves them or not. When they venture out and discover other styles like classical, jazz, ambient, or whatever, it will be an experience that will open their minds to new sounds, and thus an appreciation of music in general.

In time as they get older, they'll know what else strikes them, and the greatness will be in the experience of discovering what they didn't know existed before. That may be why some younger people don't like classical right away (i.e. it's "boring" or all sounds the same). But if and when they're exposed to it gradually, they'll look at it differently and realize their taste has changed, maybe for the better. Just my two cents.

I basically agree with Greenaxer there; people get exposed to certain things and they'll find what they want sooner or later.

Seriously, that's a pretty ignorant thing to say about prog rock by relating it to intelligence. I know PLENTY of people who are infinitely more intelligent than me and are fine and dandy enjoying their techno or R&B or whatever. By this train of thought, Stephen Hawking listens to music nobody else could even hear.

Why travel all the way from US to Europe only for one show?
Let's hope for a tour, they did say the album was prob finished recorded by then (at least.) :Smokin: !

Or whatcha' sayon' folks?:headbang:

Let's hope for a Symphony X/ Circus Maximus tour.....
whatcha say, Real Head Banger??? :kickass:

Hmm...whats intelligence anyway? I question if what is commonly referred to as talent or IQ has anything to do with intelligence whatsoever.

(The purpose of this post is not to start a debate about what intelligence is, it's just a reminder that definitions of some stuff can be more indistinct than we usually, initially assume.)

Well SX and CM would def' kick ass! Saw CM last year, but it would give ya'll whiplash to experience both bands at same night I would think :D. (I guess it your at CM board Pharoah? :D)

Yngvai X, people doing it to see a single show I could understand, people in the norwegian fanclub went to the US only for the DT Nyc show for instance :).
I was just thinking about the bands you know... since the album is done deal by then... why not a European tour to promote the new album?
Seriously kickass, if no norwegian show is confirmed for SX im prog going to SRF \m/.
