Symphony X news about the new album

I agree that New Mythology Suite was their best, but they were always one of those bands I thought could have a killer modern sound and really make a name for themselves commercially.

Iconoclast Artwork And Tracklisting Unveiled - see http://www.bravewords.com/news/158783

North America's progressive metal masterminds SYMPHONY X have unveiled the two artwork versions and tracklistings for their ninth studio album and Nuclear Blast debut, Iconoclast. It will be available in Europe on June 17th and in North America on June 21st.

Illustrator and film concept artist Warren Flanagan (Watchmen, The Incredible Hulk, 2012) is the talent behind the album artwork. Here, he shares his creative process on the new album’s artwork:

“The idea was to create imagery that was a little darker in tone to previous Symphony X albums and to represent the overall theme of Iconoclast into the artwork. The whole concept came from Mike [Romeo], who had a strong idea of what the cover should represent based off the music. I just ran with it. When the album’s title was decided on, I focused the image based on the meaning of it. I also wanted to use the band’s signature 'masks' but present them in a way that connected to the new album.”

Symphony X founder and lead guitarist Michael Romeo has the following to say about Flanagan’s art:

"We worked with Warren on the last CD, Paradise Lost, and have a good relationship with him. When I talk to Warren about artwork ideas, a lot of times we end up making comparisons to films and movies. With the new CD, Iconoclast, the music and lyrics have a darker mechanical/technological theme, and I remember us talking about scenes from films like The Matrix and Terminator. From there, we sent him some song titles and lyrics (songs like 'Dehumanized,' 'Bastards Of The Machine,' 'Electric Messiah') and just let Warren run with the ball. He has a great imagination and style, and he totally gets what we are trying to convey with the music."

The tracklisting for the jewel-cased version of Iconoclast is:

'Iconoclast'
'The End Of Innocence'
'Dehumanized'
'Bastards Of The Machine'
'Heretic'
'Children Of A Faceless God'
'Electric Messiah'
'Prometheus (I Am Alive)'
'When All Is Lost'

:( is about right. :erk: also covers it nicely.

I'll definitely buy it nonetheless, though it's weird that the 2CD special edition even has a different track order from the regular edition.

At first I thought the art looked like it should be for some wank tastic tech band like Decrepit Birth or Beneath The Massacre, but I got used to it and am cool with it. Songtitles sound like the songs are gonna be heeaaaavyyyy.

For me, The New Mythology Suite was their finest moment. However, with each of the last two discs, they've been making a conscious effort to move towards a more straight-up Metal sound. I would love to see them drift back a bit towards their roots. But given their upswing in record and concert sales, that's just not very realistic.

+1.

I disagree. One album does not = "their roots." Divine Wings of Tragedy and The Damnation Game have songs much closer in vain to what The Odyssey and Paradise Lost, as well as this new stuff are doing. V was a great album, but it was their "soft" album and definitely felt like a one off that they should never do again. They were always a metal band, not Genesis, and Romeo is far more influenced by King Diamond,Annihilator, Fate, Maiden, early Yngwie, etc than he is prog rock. While it's a matter of preference at the end of the day, I never understood this opinion because it feels like people ignore all the heavy-as-fuck songs on the first four albums and only focus on V, which is clearly very different from anything the band has ever done by and large. And also, the same crowd ignores tracks like The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, and Revalation, which is basically the sort of Symphony X I would assume they wanted. But it's all opinion anyways. :D

Another new song. It's the heavy one Dehumanized. Sounds very modern metal influenced, djent riffs dare I say it are deployed and the song is more or less a showcase for guitar and vocals and the melody gets completely lost somewhere. The chorus is kind of ok but only if you like it ultra heavy. Heavy guitar riff fans will love this song probably. Seekers of subtlety and melody will need to gain solace elsewhere on the album.

That was certainly delightfully heavy. It did have a touch of that djent feel to it, which I appreciated. I think I'm going to like this album a lot.

Scar Symmetry, Borealis, Pagan's Mind, Symphony X. It's turning out to be a hell of a spring/early summer for my metal.

uhg...I hate how all heavy syncopated riffs are all the sudden considered djent riffs. It's not a djent riff unless it sounds like a Meshuggah rip-off.

Anyways, the new song rules I can't wait to see them and for this new album to come out.

It sounds like a great balls out Sabbath-ish (Hell the pre-chorus and event he chorus sound like something Leif from Candlemass would write) sort of song to me. If you hate metal you'll hate this song of course.

That happens when people get stuck in their melodic power metal bubbles...

If you really listen to djent, you'll identify what a djent riff sounds like! ;)
