Paradise Lost
Heretic
The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Oculus ex Inferni
1. Paradise Lost's title track was never one of my favorites (I think the chorus, while serene, is quite bland), but it certainly beats a short interlude. I know that they were crunched for time when they wrote and recorded Twilight, and I get the impression that MJR just threw Sonata together to fill up space - a filler in every sense of the word.
2. I have to go with Heretic, one of the few really standout tracks on Iconoclast in my opinion. Classic Symphony X it is not, but it
is quality. If A Lesson Before Dying had Russell singing on it, I'd pick it in a heartbeat, but Rod drags every song on the debut down. Still, the music on ALBD is amazing and easily the best from the debut.
3. This one is a no-brainer, even though I love Fallen. Divine Wings is probably my favorite Symphony X tune.
4. Easily Oculus. A great, catchy opening to Paradise Lost and a fantastic prelude to STWOF. It doesn't have the awful lyrics or overall blandness of WAIL, either, a track I find to be one of the most overrated on Iconoclast. Only the middle instrumental section of that song stands out to me; the polymetric "echo" effect that the piano had behind the guitar was great. The rest of the song seemed like MJR and the guys said "hey, we need a ballad with melodic stuff since the rest of the album is so mechanical and intense, so let's throw something together real quick." It felt like they were following a formula, and thus I feel the magic of earlier ballads like Communion were completely absent in this.

Also, I agree with you about Reign.
